Name:
Named in honor of Thomas Hodge-Smith (27 October 1894, Swindon, Wiltshire, England - 8 June 1945), mineralogist and curator of the Australian Museum, Sydney, Australia.
Closely related to schulenbergite (also trigonal), having one of seven Cu-dominated sites replaced with single Zn-dominated one. Also chemically related to ktenasite and christelite. Compare 'UM1992-30-SO:CCuHZn', the Zn analogue of schulenbergite, 'Unnamed Cu-Zn Sulphate (of Schmutz et al.)', and bechererite.


The species is reported to have an interesting, unique "decorated, interrupted-sheet structure". In contrast, the crystal structure of schulenbergite is based on an uninterrupted sheet.

Members of the namuwite group exhibit gordaite-type sheets. Hodgesmithite exhibits a modified version of the sheet topology with a slightly lower M/T ratio of 7:2 (compared to 4:1 in the archetypal gordaite-type sheet).
