Originally described from Dzhezkazgan Mine (Zhezkazgan Mine), Dzhezkazgan, Zhezqazghan Oblysy (Dzezkazgan Oblast'; Dzhezkazgan Oblast'; Djezkazgan Oblast'; Jezkazgan Oblast'), Kazakhstan. Occurs with bornite, chalcocite, and galena in a sandstone.

Possibly related to Unnamed (Re-Pb-Mo-Fe-Cu Sulphide).

One of a very few rhenium-dominant minerals; compare, e.g., rheniite, rhenium, tarkianite, and 'UM1986-51-S:Re'.
