The mineral was first found by a miner named Cann in 1903
or 1904 on the 480-foot level of the Bultfontein mine at Kimberley. Named in 1932 by John Parry, Alpheus Fuller Williams, and Frederick Eugene Wright for the type locality at Bultfontein, Kimberly, Free State Province, South Africa. Pronounced bilt-von-tain-ite.
