The Incredible Evolution Of AMD EPYC HPC Performance Shown In The Azure Cloud

Azure HB-series VM performance and the AMD EPYC server CPUs more broadly have evolved phenomenally over the past 6+ years for leading HPC performance in the industry.

Even with the higher core/vCPU counts of the newer generation Azure HB-series VMs, the latest Azure HBv5 was still delivering the best performance-per-core in these HPC workloads.

Seeing over 9x gains over the past six years of Azure HB-series VMs is mighty impressive.

Across many of the HPC benchmarks there typically was at least 8~9x or more performance going from aging Azure HBv2 VMs powered by AMD EPYC Rome to the newest Azure HBv5 powered by Genoa with HBM3 memory.

In the workloads really hungry for memory bandwidth, the Azure HBv5 performance goes extremely wild and could deliver nearly 16x the performance of the top-end HBv2 instance.
