The Incredible Evolution Of AMD EPYC HPC Performance Shown In The Azure Cloud

Even for workloads like Blender 3D modeling are some very substantial performance gains with each new generation of Azure HB-series VMs and EPYC processors.

The WRF weather forecasting software is another great example of the huge potential performance uplift from making use of EPYC CPUs with HBM3 memory.

The BRL-CAD open-source CAD software also enjoyed significantly better performance jumping from HBv4 to HBv5 top-end VMs at more than 2x the performance or more than 5x going from the Azure HBv2 VMs from 2019.

Across dozens of different workloads tested the Azure HBv5 VMs powered by AMD EPYC CPUs with HBM3 memory were delivering phenomenal performance for HPC and other memory bandwidth intensive workloads. It's incredible seeing the performance of the Azure HB-class VMs for HPC over simply the past six years and more broadly the continued terrific high performance computing gains being made on AMD EPYC. Thanks again to Microsoft for supplying the access to these HB-series VMs for making this round of benchmarking possible.
