Framework 13 With AMD Ryzen AI 300 Series "Strix Point" Makes For A Great Linux Laptop

Even for those dabbling with HPC workloads from your laptop on-the-go, the new Framework 13 with Ryzen AI 300 series is a great option for a new laptop or upgrading an existing Framework 13.

Across 200+ benchmarks carried out, the Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 within the Framework 13 was 10% faster than the ASUS Zenbook S16 with the same SoC. The Framework 13 was also 29% faster than the Intel Core Ultra 7 256V Lunar Lake SoC within the ASUS Zenbook S14.

Across all 200+ benchmarks, the Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 within the Framework 13 was consuming around 23 Watts on average with a peak of 50 Watts, a nice improvement compared to the prior-gen Ryzen 7 7840U within the Framework 13 with a 29 Watt average. It's also much better than the 40 Watt average with the Ryzen 7 7840HS within the Framework 16 while achieving similar performance.

Even with the strong performance out of the new Framework 13, under load it averaged to a comfortable 75 degree core temperature that was better than the prior-gen Ryzen 7 7840U at 81 degrees and many of the other older, slower laptops tested.

When generating the geo mean on all the graphics benchmarks, the Framework 13 and Zenbook S16 were tied and showing the great AMD RDNA 3.5 integrated graphics capabilities compared to Intel and prior generation RDNA.

All in the Framework 13 upgrade with the Ryzen AI 300 series is a great option for developers, content creators, and Linux enthusiasts at large. With the flagship AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 option is excellent compute capabilities with competitive power efficiency and great thermals. If using a modern Linux distribution like Ubuntu 25.04 or Fedora Workstation 42, there is great out-of-the-box support for the new Framework 13 internals with Strix Point.

Framework 13 with the AMD Ryzen AI 300 series is mighty impressive for Linux users and highly recommended by Phoronix. The one critique is the drawn out batches/pre-ordering timeline if you are more in a rush for upgrading/replacing your laptop. With it looking like it will be a month or two before new orders ship, the turnaround time is unfortunate and also at that stage nearing one year since Strix Point first shipped. Hopefully as Framework Computer continues to expand and build up its supply chain they'll be able to more timely deliver new products to customers.
