Revisiting The Linux 6.19 Performance With "NEXT_BUDDY" Now Disabled
RocksDB remained slightly faster on Linux 6.19.
The Nginx HTTPS web server static file serving benchmark showed a slight improvement with NEXT_BUDDY disabled.
The Apache HTTPD web server showed a more pronounced improvement from disabling NEXT_BUDDY on this AMD Threadripper workstation.
CPU-based AI inferencing with Llama.cpp also showed some improvements out of the kernel with NEXT_BUDDY disabled but for some of these benchmarks the performance remained lower than using Linux 6.18 LTS on this AMD Ryzen Threadripper Zen 5 system.
Linux 6.19 now with NEXT_BUDDY disabled did resolve some of the performance regressions seen earlier in the cycle. NEXT_BUDDY disabled on Linux 6.19 did also deliver some performance gains not otherwise seen to this point in my testing. But there were still some cases of Linux 6.19 Git performing worse than Linux 6.18 stable. Overall though Linux 6.19 with NEXT_BUDDY disabled seems like the right decision at this point and we'll see how it's looking if/when NEXT_BUDDY is reworked further.
