By default the SiFive HiFive Premier P550 is shipping with Ubuntu 24.04 LTS. As I showed a few days ago when re-testing the HiFive Unmatched, the Ubuntu Linux RISC-V performance has evolved nicely over the past four years.

Using the SiFive HiFive Premier P550 the past several weeks has been a pleasant experience with it being much more capable than the aging HiFive Unmatched and the RISC-V Linux ecosystem also evolving a lot over the past few years with better optimizations, increased software package compatibility, and other improvements.

It's been a pleasure working with the SiFive HiFive Premier the past several weeks and it's been much more capable than other RISC-V boards like the StarFive VisionFive 2.

For putting the SiFive HiFive Premier P550 performance into perspective, I ran some benchmarks against the ARM-based Raspberry Pi 400 (Raspberry Pi 4) and Raspberry Pi 500 (Raspberry Pi 5) along with the SiFive HiFive Unmatched. Both SiFive HiFive boards were tested using Ubuntu 24.04 LTS for the current RISC-V Linux experience. From there dozens of benchmarks were run for looking at the performance of the HiFive Premier P550 compared to the HiFive Unmatched as well as the ARM Cortex competition on the Raspberry Pi side.
