AMD Threadripper 7980X Performance On Linux Two Years After Release
Overall the AMD Ryzen Threadripper 7980X performance under Linux matured nicely over the past two years. Overall the performance is up and there weren't any glaring regressions observed in this comparison.
On a geo mean basis for the 58 benchmarks carried out, the Threadripper 7980X workstation build is around 8% faster now on the latest Linux software stack (Ubuntu 25.10 + Linux 6.18) compared to Ubuntu 23.10 used on launch day two years ago this week.
The CPU power consumption average of the Threadripper 7980X was similar now to then, but there was longer periods of the Zen 4 cores spending time now in lower power states to help with better power efficiency. The AMD P-State Linux driver has seen a lot of work in general over the past two years to help optimize AMD CPU power efficiency.
Two years later the Ryzen Threadripper 7000 series remain strong performers under Linux and have aged well with the open-source ecosystem.
