To little surprise for regular Phoronix readers, the most dramatic performance improvements from Ubuntu 19.10 to 21.10 were found to be on the Radeon graphics side... Even though the Radeon RX Vega 64 was in good shape in 2019 and enjoying open-source mainline support since 2017, over the past two years the open-source AMD OpenGL and Vulkan drivers have matured very nicely thanks to the work of AMD, Valve, and other parties.
The Vulkan compute performance also advanced very well over the past two years even for Vega/GFX9.
