Across 50+ benchmarks the Ubuntu 24.04 LTS WSL2 environment led to 87% the performance of running Ubuntu 24.04 LTS bare metal on the same AMD Ryzen 9 desktop hardware. It was mostly workloads involving I/O that bring a significant performance impairment to WSL2.
It was quite interesting to see Ubuntu WSL2 out performing bare metal Ubuntu 24.04.3 LTS when it came to PHP and Python scripting for light, single-threaded applications.

WSL2 remains "good enough" for those just wanting to run some Linux apps / code development and are stuck using Microsoft Windows 11 due to employer or school restrictions. It's more convenient than running a full fledged VM and for most workloads the performance is okay for local testing/development purposes.
