Windows 10 May 2020 Performance For WSL vs. WSL2
69 tests were run across the three operating system configurations. Ubuntu 20.04 LTS won 60% of the tests but interestingly 40% of the time WSL/WSL2 was faster than Ubuntu 20.04 LTS itself, albeit usually by slim margins.
When taking the geometric mean of those 69 benchmarks, using WSL2 on Windows 10 May 2020 Update meant around 21% better performance over the original WSL implementation. Ubuntu 20.04 running bare metal on the same system was faster by just 8%. With WSL2 offering much faster I/O as what was the main bottleneck with the original WSL, the WSL2 performance is now incredibly close to that of Ubuntu itself running on the system.
