Bookmarks are an essential part of pretty much any online app or service. We use bookmarks when browsing the web, scrolling through social media feeds, and looking for solutions to problems on online forums. Whether you find a webpage that you want to refer to in the future or you come across a funny meme that you wish to share with your friends, the standard practice is to bookmark it so it can be accessed easily later. However, the issue with bookmarking is that every app or software has its own list of bookmarks, making it difficult to find the exact link or post you're looking for.
Moreover, several apps may not have the ability to search for bookmarks, so you'll have to manually look through all the links you've saved to find the exact one you're looking for. Considering these inefficiencies, I decided to look for a universal bookmarking solution. That's when I came across Karakeep. Not only does Karakeep allow you to store all your bookmarks in one place, but it's also a self-hosted solution with multiple other features that can replace dedicated apps. Trust me when I say this -- once you start using Karakeep, there's no going back. Here's why.
5 reasons I switched to a self-hosted, bookmarking solution
From privacy control to archiving and cross-platform access, Hoarder redefines how you manage and organize bookmarks effectively and securely.
It automatically organizes your bookmarks
The power of tags!
The way Karakeep works is that as soon as you add a bookmark, it automatically uses AI to categorize it into different lists. For instance, if you bookmark an article about the best laptops on XDA, it will add tags like Tech, XDA, Gadgets, Laptop, Windows, etc. to it. The next time you bookmark something similar, it will add relevant tags and group these articles together. This makes it easy to find all the articles or posts from a certain niche.
You can also add your custom tags to bookmarks to make it easy to find them. For example, let's assume you're bookmarking a few research papers for your school assignment. You can add an 'assignment' label to all of them. Whenever you want to access these bookmarks, all you have to do is search for that specific tag. Now that's what convenience is all about!
Robust search features
Saves a lot of time
Speaking of search. Karakeep lets you search through your bookmarks using tags or the content inside the links or posts. The fact that you can search through your browser's bookmarks, Instagram's saved posts, and your favorite posts from X -- all in one place -- is so satisfying. There's no need to switch between multiple apps or manually scroll through long lists.
If you still want some sort of systematic segregation inside Karakeep, you can always create individual lists based on platforms. So, you can have a list of Chrome bookmarks, X posts, Instagram posts, subreddits, etc. While the lists will remain different, you can still search through all of them at once.
It's more than just a bookmark manager
Store notes and images, too
Along with storing bookmarks from all over the web, Karakeep also has the ability to store quick notes, images from your clipboard, etc. I use this to store small snippets of information that I find on the internet. If I see a post on a social media app that has something important, but the post itself is not worth bookmarking, I just copy the data relevant to me and paste it inside Karakeep. This is also applicable to images. If I see a picture I want to reference later, I no longer take a screenshot while I'm on my PC. Instead, I just copy it and paste it into a note in Karakeep. This makes it a lot more convenient to access.
Additionally, all of these elements added to Karakeep can be accessed via multiple devices. For instance, there's a Google Chrome extension and a Firefox add-on that quickly lets you add webpages to bookmarks and access them when you need to. Karakeep also has smartphone apps on both iOS and Android, so you can access your favorites no matter where you are. You can also create wishlists with links to e-commerce pages, so it's easier to track the prices of items you want to buy from different platforms -- all in one place.
Hoard links in one place
I can't tell you how much easier my life has been ever since I started accumulating all my bookmarks in one place. The best part is that I actually started going back to my bookmarks to see what I've saved, something I didn't do earlier since I was overwhelmed by so many different lists in every app. Now, I can access all my bookmarks in one place, so I know exactly what I've saved for later and how to find it when I need it. It also helps that I can access all the bookmarks and notes from multiple devices, and all of this data stays with me since it's self-hosted. It's a complete win-win, if you ask me.
