Stuffing environmentalism in a box and marking it "liberal" is an awful idea, in church and in politics. Care for creation should go hand in hand with fiercely orthodox, joyfully weird transcendental faith, and folk of all political stripes should be welcome in the coalition.

RIP Sir Roger Scruton. As kind as he was brilliant. He once let my daughter, aged 18months, rampage through his library, shushing my attempts to restrain her, and let her keep the book she swiped. He said children being drawn to books was a wonderful thing.

He said books are magical for children who aren't old enough to read, because they are full of secret messages they can't yet decode but one day will be able to unlock. No idea if he was speaking off the cuff or quoting someone I'm not smart enough to have read.

Praising God for the safe arrival of Beatrix Stokes, born 1st May. It was a tough birth but she was tougher still, and although we're still in hospital she's recovering well and we might get home tomorrow. The doctors, midwives, nurses and all the staff have been brilliant.

I'm going to spoil the ending and say this is a brilliant way of serving eggs to people who might otherwise struggle to afford a nutritious breakfast. A wonderful thread to start the day.

Oh my word what a charity shop find. They did me £20 for the lot. loved ladybird history books as a kid. History how history is supposed to be taught. Can't wait to read these to my girls.

It’s frustrating watching my phone travelling across London after I was mugged tonight and be told the police can’t do anything. Everything on my body hurts from the mugging, but what hurts most is knowing the person who did it is laughing, knowing the police won’t do anything

GK Chesterton talks about this in his short history of England. Our remote island home makes us insular and hobbitish while the horizon stirs us to adventure. So you fret about your neighbour or your discover Hawaii. There is no middle ground.
