Helsinki ice hockey club Jokerit are to be fully-owned by Jari Kurri, with the withdrawal of Norilsk Nickel from their 40 percent stake in the club after Jokerit announced they would no longer compete in Russia's KHL league.

The club did not announce the price of the deal or any financial details about the transaction.

Kurri is a former NHL player who has had an ownership stake in the club since 2019 when Gennady Timchenko and Roman Rotenberg sold their stakes in the club.

Both Timchenko and Rotenberg have been on US sanctions lists since 2015. Kurri, the club's General Manager, had taken full ownership in 2019 and then sold a 40 percent stake to Norilsk Nickel Harjavalta, a subsidiary of the Russian mining firm Norilsk Nickel, which is owned by Vladimir Potanin.

"We have a lot of work ahead of us to restructure the club's ownership and in seeking funding for operations," Kurri was quoted as saying in a club statement. "We are however happy to notice that Finnish businesses and individuals have the desire to get involved with Jokerit."

The club says they will announce their future plans as soon as possible. They have already confirmed they are to leave the KHL, following Russia's attack on Ukraine.

The club last played in the Finnish league in the 2013-14 season. The league chairman Heikki Hiltunen has told Yle that he has held informal talks with Kurri.
