A child who was injured after being crushed between a folding bed and a wall at a daycare centre in Vantaa last month has died.
The incident occurred as some of the children were waking up from naptime at the daycare.
According to police, a member of the daycare staff initially noticed the two-year-old child in the bed, but their attention was momentarily distracted by another child. The worker then inadvertently raised the bed up, trapping the child between the bed and the wall.
"The incident is a huge human tragedy and all parties involved are deeply shocked by the situation," Detective Inspector Marko Särkkä, who is leading the investigation, told Yle.
Police had been investigating the incident as aggravated negligent injury, but the charge has since changed to suspected negligent homicide.
In a statement, the City of Vantaa expressed its deep regret at the death of the child and offered condolences to the child's relatives and loved ones. The City also plans to fly flags at half mast at City Hall on Tuesday 7 April as a mark of respect.
Similar incidents
The Finnish Safety and Chemicals Agency (Tukes) has been notified of several similar incidents involving folding beds over the past decade.
A list of incidents reported to Tukes from 2015 to 2025, obtained by Yle, showed that at least three previous cases involved accidents similar to the Vantaa incident, each with beds from different manufacturers.
In two other cases, a child’s fingers were trapped in the hinges of a bunk bed from the same manufacturer.
