Finland were overpowered by world number two and reigning Eurobasket champions Spain on Saturday evening in Ljubljana.

Petteri Koponen top-scored for the Finns with 17 points, but that was not enough to keep alive hopes that Henrik Dettman’s team might advance into the quarter finals. After the Spain defeat they were reliant on Greece beating Slovenia, but the Slovenes won that match 73-65.

It is a disappointing end to a tournament that saw Finland beat highly-ranked countries including Turkey, Russia and Greece, creating a wave of support and goodwill for the team.

Finland’s last game in the championships is on Monday against Slovenia at 10pm Finnish time. It will be screened live on Yle Areena and Yle TV2.
