After a devastating defeat by the US national team, Finland has won Ukraine in a decisive turn in the world championships. Finland beat Ukraine 81—76. Small forward position player Shawn Huff lead the team to the victory with several morale-lifting three-point shots early in the game.
The game went on evenly until half time. Just a second before the whistle blew, Finland took a time out and managed to secure a shot for point guard Petteri Koponen, who brought the score to a near 35—37.
The Finnish team or ”wolf pack” outdid itself at the start of the third quarter. The team scored 22 points in the first six minutes, managing an impressive lead of 57—39. The rest of the quarter was more harrowing, as Ukraine accrued 13 more points and came close to tying.
But the fourth quarter saw more heroics, as point guards Sasu Salin and Teemu Rannikko played their best. Rannikko’s backboard basket came at an opportune time, but Ukraine still came in strong. With just 26 seconds to go, Ukraine was only four points away from Finland.
The match ended after a stellar performance by Huff, who made a grand total of five three-point shots and scored 23 points.
