Ukraine has issued an apology to Finland for the two stray drones that crashed in southeastern Finland on Sunday.

According to a Ukrainian foreign affairs ministry representative, the drones were not targeting Finland under any circumstances.

The representative said that the drones ending up in Finnish territory was likely due to electronic signal interference by Russia.

Two drones crashed near the southeastern city of Kouvola on Sunday morning.

The Finnish Air Force has confirmed that at least one of the devices was Ukrainian.

According to information obtained by Yle, Finland has not asked Ukraine to reduce its long-range drone strikes on Russian oil facilities.

"Finland has definitely not communicated anything like this," the source said.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky noted on Monday afternoon that he had spoken with Finnish President Alexander Stubb.

Among other things, in a post on social media site X, Zelensky said that he had discussed Sunday's drone incident with the Finnish president.

"Of course, we also discussed the drone incident that recently took place on Finnish territory. Alex and I see the situation in the same way. We are sharing all necessary information. Thank you!", Zelensky's post read.

Drone destroyed in controlled explosion

Finnish authorities destroyed one of the drones with explosives late on Sunday night, police have confirmed.

The decision was made to destroy the device because it was carrying an undetonated warhead, police said.

On Monday, former Finnish Defence Forces research chief Jyri Kosola suggested that one of the drones that strayed into Finland likely exploded on impact.

The National Bureau of Investigation has opened a preliminary investigation into the incident.

Ukraine has recently carried out a number of drone strikes on Russian oil infrastructure facilities around the Gulf of Finland.

On Sunday morning, several small, slow-moving devices were detected flying at low altitude in Finnish airspace at sea and in southeastern parts of the country, according to the defence ministry.

The ministry said the Air Force scrambled F/A-18 Hornet fighter jets to identify the objects.

Later that morning there were reports that two aerial devices had crashed in Kouvola.
