The Left Alliance and Greens are set to submit a motion of no confidence in the government about Finland's escalating poverty.

Left Alliance chair Minja Koskela pointed to recent statements from the Finnish Federation for Social Affairs and Health (Soste) saying that efforts by the state have failed to reduce poverty and marginalisation. The federation is an umbrella organisation of 200 NGOs in the social affairs and health sectors.

"According to a recent report by Soste, almost a million Finns are already at risk of poverty and social exclusion. The poverty crisis has been exacerbated in particular by the right-wing government's deep cuts to social security," Koskela said in a statement.

According to the Left Alliance, the Greens will also join the motion on the matter.

It said the country's largest opposition party, the Social Democrats, has been involved in preparing the motion, but has not made a final decision on whether to participate.

The no-confidence motion is expected to be filed next week.
