L'anhinga, parfois appelé serpent serpent, darter, American Darter, ou l'eau de dinde, est un oiseau d'eau des régions plus chaudes des Amériques. Le mot anhinga vient de la langue brésilienne Tupi et signifie oiseau diabolique ou serpent. Il s'agit d'un oiseau de cormoran ayant une longueur moyenne de corps de 85 cm, une envergure de 117 cm et une masse de 1,35 kg. C'est un piscivore sombre et plongé avec un cou très long, et ne nage que le cou au-dessus de l'eau. Lors de la natation dans ce style, le nom de serpent serpent est apparent, puisque seul le col coloré apparaît au dessus de l'eau, l'oiseau ressemble à un serpent prêt à frapper. Ils n'ont pas de nares externes et respirent uniquement par leur épiglotte. L'anhinga est placé dans la famille Darter, Anhingidae, et est étroitement lié aux danseurs indiens, africains et australiens. Comme d'autres dards, l'anhinga chasse en lançant des poissons et d'autres petites proies en utilisant son bec pointu et mince. The anhinga, sometimes called snakebird, darter, American darter, or water turkey, is a water bird of the warmer parts of the Americas. The word anhinga comes from the Brazilian Tupi language and means devil bird or snake bird. It is a cormorant-like bird with an average body length of 85 cm, a wingspan of 117 cm, and a mass of up to 1.35 kg. It is a dark-plumaged piscivore with a very long neck, and often swims with only the neck above water. When swimming in this style the name snakebird is apparent, since only the colored neck appears above water the bird looks like a snake ready to strike. They do not have external nares and breathe solely through their epiglottis. The anhinga is placed in the darter family, Anhingidae, and is closely related to Indian, African, and Australian darters. Like other darters, the anhinga hunts by spearing fishes and other small prey using its sharp, slender beak.
