La démocratie est une forme de gouvernement dans laquelle tous les citoyens éligibles participent de manière égale, directement ou indirectement par l'intermédiaire de représentants élus, dans la proposition, le développement et la création de lois. Il englobe l'égalité, la justice et la liberté sociales, religieuses, culturelles, ethniques et raciales. Le terme provient du grec δημοκρατία «règle du peuple», qui a été trouvé à partir de δῆμος «personnes» et κράτος «pouvoir» ou «règle» au 5ème siècle avant notre ère pour désigner les systèmes politiques qui existent alors dans les villes-états grecs, notamment Athènes; Le terme est un antonyme à ἀριστοκρατία "règle d'une élite". Bien que théoriquement, ces définitions sont en opposition, en pratique, la distinction a été floue historiquement. Le système politique de l'Athènes classique, par exemple, a accordé la citoyenneté démocratique à une classe d'élite d'hommes libres et exclut les esclaves et les femmes de la participation politique. Democracy is a form of government in which all eligible citizens participate equally—either directly or indirectly through elected representatives—in the proposal, development, and creation of laws. It encompasses social, religious, cultural, ethnic and racial equality, justice, and liberty. The term originates from the Greek δημοκρατία "rule of the people", which was found from δῆμος "people" and κράτος "power" or "rule" in the 5th century BCE to denote the political systems then existing in Greek city-states, notably Athens; the term is an antonym to ἀριστοκρατία "rule of an elite". While theoretically these definitions are in opposition, in practice the distinction has been blurred historically. The political system of Classical Athens, for example, granted democratic citizenship to an elite class of free men and excluded slaves and women from political participation.
