Le Ginkgo est un genre de plantes très insolites non florissantes. Le nom scientifique est également utilisé comme nom anglais. Le genre est apparu pour la première fois dans le Permien, il y a 250 millions d'années, peut-être dérivé de «fougères» de l'ordre Peltaspermales. Le taux d'évolution dans le genre a été lent, et presque toutes ses espèces sont éteintes à la fin du Pliocène; L'exception est la seule espèce vivante, le Ginkgo biloba, qui se trouve uniquement dans la nature en Chine, mais est cultivé à travers le monde. Les relations entre les ginkgos et les autres groupes de plantes ne sont pas complètement résolues. Ginkgo is a genus of highly unusual non-flowering plants. The scientific name is also used as the English name. The genus first appeared in the Permian, 250 million years ago, possibly derived from "seed ferns" of the order Peltaspermales. The rate of evolution within the genus has been slow, and almost all its species had become extinct by the end of the Pliocene; the exception is the sole living species, Ginkgo biloba, which is only found in the wild in China, but is cultivated across the world. The relationships between ginkgos and other groups of plants are not fully resolved.
