Le tournage est un processus d'usinage dans lequel un outil de coupe, typiquement un morceau d'outil non rotatif, décrit une trajectoire hélicoïdale en se déplaçant plus ou moins linéairement pendant que la pièce tourne. Les axes de mouvement de l'outil peuvent être littéralement une ligne droite, ou ils peuvent être le long d'un ensemble de courbes ou d'angles, mais ils sont essentiellement linéaires. Habituellement, le terme «tournage» est réservé à la génération de surfaces externes par cette action de coupe, alors que cette même action de coupe essentielle lorsqu'elle est appliquée sur des surfaces internes est appelée «ennuyeuse». Ainsi, l'expression "tournant et ennuyant" catégorise la famille de processus plus vaste. La découpe des visages sur la pièce à usiner, que ce soit avec un outil tournant ou ennuyeux, s'appelle "face", et peut être regroupé dans l'une ou l'autre catégorie en tant que sous-ensemble. Le tournage peut se faire manuellement, sous une forme traditionnelle de tour, ce qui nécessite souvent une supervision continue de l'opérateur, ou en utilisant un tour automatisé qui ne fonctionne pas. Aujourd'hui, le type le plus courant de cette automatisation est le contrôle numérique par ordinateur, mieux connu sous le nom de CNC. Turning is a machining process in which a cutting tool, typically a non-rotary tool bit, describes a helical toolpath by moving more or less linearly while the workpiece rotates. The tool's axes of movement may be literally a straight line, or they may be along some set of curves or angles, but they are essentially linear. Usually the term "turning" is reserved for the generation of external surfaces by this cutting action, whereas this same essential cutting action when applied to internal surfaces is called "boring". Thus the phrase "turning and boring" categorizes the larger family of processes. The cutting of faces on the workpiece, whether with a turning or boring tool, is called "facing", and may be lumped into either category as a subset. Turning can be done manually, in a traditional form of lathe, which frequently requires continuous supervision by the operator, or by using an automated lathe which does not. Today the most common type of such automation is computer numerical control, better known as CNC.
