Germany considering extradition of suspect in murder of Portnov

2 min read

German authorities are considering the extradition of Andriy Portnov, a suspect in the murder of former Ukrainian politician and lawyer. This was reported by the Cologne prosecutor's office in response to a DW inquiry.

"The prosecutor's office refused to disclose details of the case, as 'it concerns an ongoing extradition process involving international participation.' The prosecutor's office also did not specify which country the suspect might be extradited to," the publication notes.

Portnov was reportedly shot dead on May 21, 2025, near the American School in the upscale Madrid suburb of Pozuelo de AlarcΓ³n, where his children attended and where he lived. He was shot in the back as he was about to get into his Mercedes, which was parked on the sidewalk. The Spanish National Police launched a manhunt for three people involved in the murder. The judge investigating Portnov's death has ordered the investigation to remain confidential.

Politician and lawyer Portnov (born 1973) was a member of Parliament of the 5th and 6th convocations (2006-2007, 2007-2010). From April 2010 to February 2014, he was the head of the Main Directorate for Judicial Affairs in the presidential administration of Viktor Yanukovych and deputy (from January 24, 2014, first deputy) head of the presidential administration of Ukraine.

Since December 2021, Portnov has been under US sanctions for influencing the courts. According to journalists from the program Skhemy (Schemes), he left Ukraine in June 2022.

A murder suspect was arrested in the German town of Heinsberg in cooperation with a special operations unit of the German Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA), the Spanish National Police announced on Wednesday, February 25.
