Ukraine's MFA on Hungary's latest anti-Ukrainian steps: Budapest's disgraceful positions long known
Ukraine's Foreign Ministry commented on the Hungarian parliament's adoption of a resolution refusing to support Ukraine's accession to the European Union and opposing further military financing for Ukraine, saying that "none of these steps came as a surprise to the Ukrainian side."
"Such disgraceful positions of the Hungarian authorities have long been known. We believe that the vote refusing to support Ukraine's accession to the EU sends a signal first of all to the Hungarian national minority in Ukraine. Viktor OrbΓ‘n is effectively 'closing' the door to the EU right in front of them," the ministry said in a statement on its Telegram channel.
The ministry said official Budapest continues to play the role of a Trojan horse in the EU, attempting to block financial and military support for Ukraine in countering Russian aggression, as well as Ukraine's progress on its path toward EU membership.
"Such steps are aimed at keeping the European Union hostage. They go in line with Russia's policy toward the EU aimed at weakening and dividing a united Europe. Today the Hungarian parliament certainly received applause β in Moscow," the Foreign Ministry said.
At the same time, the ministry said the resolution does not change EU rules and has no legal force in the context of Ukraine's European integration process. It is a political step that should be viewed in the context of an election campaign.
According to the Foreign Ministry, the government decree and corresponding "law" intended to "legalize" the seizure of funds belonging to Ukraine's state-owned Oschadbank are also political moves.
"We emphasize the nullity of these decisions; we reiterate the Ukrainian side's demand for the immediate return of the stolen funds and our intention to seek justice using all national and international legal instruments," the ministry said.
