UNESCO ready to assist with assessments and emergency assistance with Bernardine Monastery in Lviv
UNESCO expressed deep concern about the strikes on March 24 that hit a building in the Bernardine Monastery area and stated its readiness to support assessments, protective measures, and emergency assistance.
βUNESCO is deeply alarmed by the 24 March strikes that hit a building in the area of Bernardine Monastery within the World Heritage property of βLβviv β the Ensemble of the Historic Centre.β
UNESCO recalls that cultural property is protected under the 1954 Hague Convention and the 1972 WorldHeritage Convention. All parties must safeguard heritage and refrain from any acts harming cultural property.
βUNESCO stands ready to support the authorities with assessments, protection measures and emergency assistance,β the organization said in its statement.
As reported, the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has asked UNESCO for assistance in documenting the consequences of the Russian attack on Lvivβs historic center, a World Heritage site. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha announced that arrangements have already been made for a UNESCO expert visit. Ukraine has also called on UNESCO to initiate sanctions against Russia in the cultural sphere.
