The 2020s (pronounced "twenty-twenties" or "two thousand [and] twenties") is the current decade that began on 1 January 2020 and will end on 31 December 2029.

The COVID-19 pandemic and its aftermath marked the early 2020s, which triggered a global economic recession, sustained rise in global inflation, and supply chain crisis. Governments worldwide issued stay-at-home orders during the early pandemic, leading to a widespread use of teleconferencing, online learning, e-commerce and food delivery services.

Politically, the 2020s has seen a rise in right-wing populist and anti-establishment movements across the world, along with anti-government demonstrations and revolts. The decade saw escalation of military conflicts, including the Russian invasion of Ukraine since 2022, the Gaza War since 2023, the 2025 Twelve-Day War, and the 2026 Iran War.

Technology has continued to evolve in the 2020s. 5G networks launched around the globe at the start of the decade and became prevalent in smartphones. Generative artificial intelligence-based applications, such as ChatGPT and DALL-E, became widespread early in the decade, allowing users to instantly generate sophisticated texts, images, and media. Virtual reality and augmented reality have been used for remote collaboration, meetings, and training. Contactless payments and streaming services have grown in popularity. The growth of cryptocurrencies and artificial intelligence has led to the cryptocurrency bubble and AI bubble. The United States has led space exploration, including with the James Webb Space Telescope, Ingenuity helicopter, and Artemis program. (Full article...)

The incumbent president, Joe Biden of the Democratic Party, initially ran for re-election as its presumptive nominee, facing little opposition and easily defeating Dean Phillips, a U.S. representative, during the Democratic primaries; however, what was broadly considered a poor debate performance in June 2024 intensified concerns about his age and health, and led to calls within his party for him to leave the race. After initially declining to do so, Biden ultimately withdrew from the race on July 21, 2024, becoming the first eligible incumbent president to withdraw since Lyndon B. Johnson in 1968. Biden immediately endorsed Harris, who officially became the party's presidential nominee on August 5 and became the first presidential nominee who did not participate in the primaries since Vice President Hubert Humphrey in 1968. Harris selected Walz as her running mate. (Full article...)
