Days after Dipu Chandra Das, a Hindu man, was lynched by a mob, Bangladesh’s interim government’s Education Adviser CR Abrar met his family on Tuesday.

Das, a 27-year-old factory worker from Mymensingh, was beaten to death by a mob over alleged blasphemy, and his body was subsequently set on fire on December 18. The incident sparked widespread outrage and condemnation internationally, including in India, where protests are still continuing.

‘No place for such heinous acts’

The Education Adviser reiterated that the killing was a heinous criminal act with no justification and had no place in Bangladeshi society. Allegations, rumours, or differences of belief can never excuse violence, and no individual has the right to take the law into their own hands, he said.

Killing of Dipu Chandra Das

A total of 12 people have been arrested in connection with the murder of Das.

Initial investigations have ruled out blasphemy allegations against Das and have pointed at possible workplace dispute, and the possibility of him getting a promotion may have incited some co-workers to make the baseless allegation that eventually led to the brutal murder.
