Can I create my own theme and share it with you all? If so, how would I do that? Would I use my cusotm user CSS? And then could you make it an option just like the winter theme is?

  • Also, should we make more themes?
  • Having default and winter is great, and the 4 spin-off games also have their own unique themes, but I think more themes would be kinda cool!

We already have a winter theme. The question is whether and when it should be enabled by default. If you want to create your own theme, you can do it in your own user CSS at first, and if enough people are interested in it we might add it as a wiki-wide option. Though keep in mind that the more themes there are, the more difficult it becomes to integrate them, and the more incompatibilities between themes there are. For example, the winter theme is not compatible with the themes for the spin-off games, which override the winter theme. Plus every theme also needs a separate dark mode theme. It's nearly impossible to have a theme for every combination if we have too many themes. Because of this I'd personally prefer it if we kept the scope of our themes as-is. | violine1101 (talk) 04:29, 6 February 2024 (UTC)
Yeah, adding any more themes would be a lot of work. As you said, we already have:
  • main (light)
  • winter (light)
  • dungeons (light)
  • legends (light)
  • earth (light)
  • story mode (light)
  • main (dark)
  • winter (dark)
  • dungeons (dark)
  • legends (dark)
  • earth (dark)
  • story mode (dark)
If you wanted a Nether theme, it could be as simple as just adding nether (light) and nether (dark), but that's a still a lot of extra work. --Simanelix (talk) 12:41, 6 February 2024 (UTC)

I would like if we could import halloween theme and nether theme from German wiki and French wiki. (I hope we don't need a mobile fixed width dark mode theme). There are already too many themes on the English wiki that are missing or broken.
However, MCW also needs to develop a brand new interwiki system to reduce the workload of linking between language wikis. In my opinion, this should be a more pressing and a more urgent matter than developing more themes. Themes are only more work which does not reduce future workload (insteads add more maintainance load), but there are 4 wikis in the process of forking and that is going to make managing interwiki links more difficult.

Support I agree. The interwiki situation is clearly chaotic. We should try to get all the languages linked together better as soon as possible. This might even help with translating the wiki into even more languages in the future. Really though, it would be great to see the existing languages get improved. For example, Spanish (es) is a bit of a mess with its different CSS. I am all for supporting any work on the interwiki linking, CSS, and communication. We should probably start a new wiki project for this. --Simanelix (talk) 13:52, 6 February 2024 (UTC)
I much prefer the Spanish wiki CSS design, and the extra themes on DE and FR. I actually imported some of the Spanish wiki style buttons, tables, and infobox designs onto EN via my personal CSS. But as I mentioned, themes takes more work and and leave us in more on a maintainance headache in the future with more themes. Interwiki links, on the other hand, need serious help. The fork has split the much smaller language wikis, and interwiki links being a huge burden and it being hard to link between languages makes the new language wikis hard to discover and attract new editors. I actually started the whole discussion about the system of interwiki links between languages, since I wanted to make it easier for readers to access Spanish wiki fron other wikis to see Spanish wiki's custom CSS layout, etc., with interwiki links set up via the navboxes, etc., but it's a huge pain and takes 15 minutes to just compile 8 languages for a single page, since it requires updating 9 pages, 1 by 1 each. That's so much time taken away from other productive tasks like improving language wikis, translation, or developing functional themes on EN wiki, since the current interwiki system of local links on each language wiki, one by one individually, is just so darn inefficent. The discussion has shifted quite a bit so I have splitted the discussion into multiple discussion pages. Delvin4519 (talk) 17:25, 6 February 2024 (UTC)
To be extra nitpicky: You've missed one of the skins on DE wiki: the "Technik" skin.
We use it in our redstone/command tutorial namespace, the Technik Wiki, which has just forked from Fandom and was merged back into DE wiki. Additionaly we have a gadget to change the wiki logo back to the pre-2013 version but that doesn't really count ;-).
Coming back to the topic I 👁 Image

I would like to mention, that Nether theme for EN wiki is in the works and CSS for it available here: User:Oakar567/common.css. It's basically finished, what's left is to fix background overlapping on namespace themes, upload the respective assets locally on this wiki and update file links in the theme CSS.
