Minecraft: Volume 1 is the first installment in a graphic novel series by Dark Horse Comics.[1] The story introduces the cast of the series, showing Tyler and his friends going on several quests after his life changes.
The first graphic novel set in the world of the gaming phenomenon Minecraft! Tyler is your everyday kid whose life is changed when his family has to move from the town he's always known. Thankfully, Tyler has a strong group of friends forever linked in the world of Minecraft! Tyler, along with his friends Evan, Candace, Tobi, and Grace, have been going on countless adventures together across the expanses of the Overworld and are in need of a new challenge. The group decides to go on the Ultimate Quest--to travel to the End and face off against the ender dragon!

The most exciting part as a queer person, and a nonbinary person working in the environment of Minecraft, the people who were supporting the comic, who wanted it to exist want to include diversity, we want to show that its not just binary kids playing, white kids playing, we get to show the full spectrum of identity playing in this game, literally limitless, you can be and do anything which is so exciting to see taking shape in comics, especially in Minecraft.
It was wild to me, because coming up in the industry was a very binary game, the editors that we're working with, when they pitched it were like we want to make sure diversity is at the forefront of Minecraft and that's one of the keystones of the platform
Infinite diversity means you can model and reshape the world, and the friendships that you're building are constantly modelling and reshaping and your identities can transition within the game, the game can accommodate that, make a space to explore yourself and figure out who you are and what you are and how you fit into the world.
Tyler's life is turned upside down when his family has to move far away from his hometown. Thankfully, he has a strong group of friends forever linked in the world of Minecraft!
Artwork from the comic was popular enough that it became featured on the front page of tumblr.[4][5] From 2020 to 2023, this issue was Dark Horse Comics' best selling comic.[6][7][8][9] In 2023, the book was featured as a recommendation on the streaming platform Hoopla's Graphic Novel Book Club.[10]
In 2020, the comic was nominated for the 2019 Diamond Gem Awards, in the category of Best All Ages Original/Reprint GN.[11][12][13]
