Store

[edit | edit source]

The building is situated on the corner of a road, placed between a red fence and concrete wall. The building itself is visibly aged, with old paint, graffiti, and cracks. The first floor is made of a white brick material, while the second floor is painted baby blue, with a large sign of the logo above an awning promoting the store's commodities. Between the front door are two windows, one marked "1989 World Champion", the other with a neon "OPEN" sign amongst a display of collectibles, such as a boombox. Both display the names products available at the store above the practical window, such as DVDs and new games, while below both are what appear to be garbage such as an arcade cabinet for the video game Video Game, several boxes, and a television.

Beside the building is graffiti for the video game Hunk City Rampage, which is also featured within the store itself, alongside the real world video games Defender and Robotron: 2084. Within the store are plentiful displays of various video game consoles such as Game Boys, various peripherals such as the Power Glove, among others. A wood panel counter contains a display of various video game systems. with the LaserScope on a mannequin head on top, behind it a wall almost entirely comprised of Garrett and Garrett's trophies, including his appearance on Time magazine, a caricature of him, and what appears to be a toy of R2-D2.

To the left of the counter is a bookshelf and magazine rack, containing several vintage issues.

Garret does not have a house so he lives in his video game store

History

[edit | edit source]

Game Over World was founded by Garrett Garrison, presumably after his victory at the World Video Game Championship. Upon receiving an eviction notice, Garrett headed to a storage unit auction in search of items to sell at his shop. He won the auction for Steve's past belongings after being promised an Atari Cosmos, only to find the Orb of Dominance and the Earth Crystal instead.

On his way to his first day of school, Henry briefly stopped by at Game Over World and met Garrett. Henry complimented the shop and Garrett offered him a newly-introduced mentorship service. Henry returned to the shop after an incident at his school and noticed the Orb and Crystal on display, which Garrett offered to sell for $9.50. After Henry combined the two into the Earth Cube and the misfits are lead into the Earth Portal, Game Over World is not seen again for a large majority of the film.

After Steve decided to return to Earth with the misfits during the film's epilogue, he became a co-owner of the store alongside Garrett. The store is now much more popular and successful, and has since been renamed to The Over World. The group's early-in-development video game, Block City Battle Buddies, is also available for customers to test at the store.

Trivia

[edit | edit source]
  • The name Game Over World is a pun on the name Overworld, foreshadowing later events in the film.
    • The store's name is actually renamed to The Over World at the end of the film, fully embracing the pun.
  • The logo of the business resembles that of Sega, a video game developer that was considered one of the "big two" in the early 1990s console market alongside Nintendo, at the time its main competitor.
    • In addition Minecraft previously collaborated with several of Sega's properties prior to the film's release, such as Sonic the Hedgehog and Angry Birds.
    • Nintendo is also referenced twice in the shop:
      • The cover of an issue of Nintendo Power Flash, the Canadian Nintendo newsletter in the late 80s,[1] features Garrett wearing a Power Glove, displayed on a shelf with many Nintendo consoles.
      • The Donkey Kong and Super Mario Bros. board games can be seen on display in the shop.
  • The real-world filming location was Helensville Antiques in Helensville, New Zealand.[2]
  • During the story board process, the building has the same exterior, but inside is decorated with statues of Donkey Kong and Pac-Man.[3]
