Steve is one of the main protagonists of A Minecraft Movie, modeled after the default player skin with the same name. Steve was originally born on Earth, and eventually entered the Overworld, spending multiple years there amongst the villagers and mobs. He is played by Jack Black.
Steve is a tall, rotund middle-aged man wearing a blue shirt that is carried over from his video game counterpart, albeit fully covering his neck whereas it is visible on his voxel model in the game.
Steve has a much larger beard compared to his counterpart's shorter goatee beard. In scenes of Steve first entering the mine and discovering the Overworld, his beard is completely brown. He has fair skin and shoulder length wavy brown hair. In later scenes, however, the beard has grayed with only his mustache and some parts remaining brown. He wears blue jeans and chocolate-brown loafers. Steve has brown eyes in the film, in contrast to his video game counterpartβs blue eyes.
In Wheel of Steve, Steve is depicted more closely to his original design, albeit in a new outfit. Instead of his turquoise blouse, he is equipped with a red jersey marked with 4, with a white headband and wristbands.
Having lived in the Overworld for many years, Steve is very experienced with its properties and lore. He functions as an almost mentor figure to those around him, reciting lessons and techniques learned across his adventures, such as how to use a crafting table. However, he is also a rather jolly figure, cracking jokes and excitedly shouting to enhance his statements.
His passion can turn into determination, and in turn bring him into danger. When young, he was obsessed with becoming a miner and exploring the underground, leading him to acquire dangerous equipment and trying to sneak into an off limits area.
Due to a lifelong interest, Steve is incredibly gifted at mining and wielding a pickaxe. Upon entering the Overworld, this took on a greater nuance, making him incredibly adept at placing blocks. Very quickly, he proved to be skilled, creative, and ambitious, building structures larger than those typical of the realm. In at least one scenario, he managed to erect several large figureheads of villagers within an incredibly fast speed with no signs of fatigue, and claimed to have "moved mountains with [his] mind."[1]
As he grew and mastered his skills, Steve has become an expert on survival, displaying many feats. While battling a zombie, he proved very resourceful, weaponizing one of its own arms against it. As daybreak set in, he appeared immune to the flames of the burning zombie, emerging triumphant. He has also shown near superhuman reflexes, managing to pour a water bucket while falling out of the sky, seemingly materializing the bucket out of nowhere.
As a child, Steve grew up on Earth, dreaming of exploring a mine outside of Chuglass, feeling a great intuition to explore the underground. However, he was prevented from entering by an old miner that guarded the entrance. As an adult thirty[2] years later, Steve was forced to grow up, taking up a dead end job as a doorknob salesman. The career proved very demoralizing, as his co-workers laughed at all his attempts to be creative, including his dioramas, presentation songs, and homemade costumes.[2] One day, while eating his lunch, he was reminded of the mines and sculpted a miniature version of it out of his food. Steve quit the job and returned to the mines to fulfill his childhood dream of entering it. Finally entering the mine, he began trying to harvest materials, accidentally discovering the Earth cube and The Orb of Dominance, and when he puts them together, it creates a portal which leads him to the Overworld.
In the Overworld, Steve built 3 houses, then met and tamed a wolf that he named Dennis. He eventually became an expert on the unique functions of the Overworld, and lived in a village alongside its villagers, making several useful redstone contraptions such as Steve's Lava Chicken!, a theme park, as well as an advanced underground mineshaft. He also may have written "the lyrics to a tune he heard in a music disc he found".[3] At one point, he became aware of the ender dragon, which he later described as "a hell of a foe".[1] At another point, Steve found an obsidian gateway and discovered the Nether, giving way to Malgosha aiming to destroy the Overworld as she claims the Orb of Dominance. Steve spent a seemingly long time in the Nether, held captive by the piglins. However, Dennis managed to escape, and was ordered by Steve to hide the Orb under his bed in his house on Earth. Eventually, Malgosha allowed Steve to return to the Overworld, but ordered him to return the Orb of Dominance to her, lest she kill Dennis.
Steve returned to the Overworld after the gang had ended up there, and he helped them understand their surroundings. Disappointed in the destruction of the Earth crystal, he decided to bring them home to Midport Village. There he introduced them to many things, such as villagers, an iron golem, and his lava chicken contraption. Taking Henry and Garrett into his stash, he taught them how to use a crafting table, and was fascinated by Henry's invention of the potato launcher. After speaking with Garrett about his potential, Garrett struck up a deal with him to help pay off his debt in exchange for the Orb of Dominance.
Things took a turn when General Chungus arrived to reclaim Steve's own debt, raiding the village and slaughtering several innocent villagers. Steve, now equipped with an iron sword and shield, attempted to defeat the piglins, but Garrett accidentally knocked him unconscious by swinging his buck-chuckets. After awakening, he and the male heroes evacuated to a drop, using elytra to fly away while being chased by the piglins on their ghasts.
Steve decided that the group should head for the woodland mansion, but to get there, they needed to go through the Redstone Mountains. Inside the mountains are the Redstone Mines, where Steve showed Garrett and Henry his stash of diamonds. He allowed Garrett to take some in order to pay off his debt. However, their journey was soon interrupted by the Great Hog, an artificially created piglin. As it hunted the group down, Steve ran towards a minecart, with the others following him. The minecart took them to Steve's creeper farm, where they provoked the creepers and quickly escaped, leaving the Great Hog to be blown up by the creepers.
The group then entered the woodland mansion. Following Steve's plan, which he demonstrated with models, Henry went off to retrieve the mansion's Earth crystal, while Steve worked with Garrett to distract the illagers with the Birthday Rap song. The illagers then took the duo to their fighting arena, where Steve was tied up while Garrett fought a chicken jockey. While Garrett was struggling, Steve managed to break free from the ropes and defeat the jockey just as Henry fell through the roof after retrieving the crystal.
Outside, they were cornered by the piglin army. Malgosha took the Orb back and revealed her second artificial piglin, the New Hog. Garrett decided to sacrifice himself, while Henry and Steve flew away on a ghast, but ended up crash-landing and being knocked out.
Steve woke up in the Mushroom Safe House with Dawn, Natalie and Henry, where he was reunited with Dennis. During this time, Malgosha gave the orb to two piglins, who placed it on top of a giant obsidian gateway, causing the Great Darkening.
During the final battle against the piglins, the group worked together to defeat the piglins, gathering weapons and resources. While Henry and Natalie summoned iron golems to fight the army, Steve faced Malgosha with his diamond sword and armor. Eventually, the other members of the group, including Garrett, who returned on a ghast, managed to destroy the obsidian gateway. This ended the effects of the Great Darkening and restored the Overworld. Steve then gained the upper hand on Malgosha as she began zombifying. He was able to effortlessly dodge all of her final attacks, due to her weakness, and left her to die.
In the aftermath, Steve initially planned to stay in the Overworld while the other humans returned to Earth, sharing a farewell with Garrett, but allowed Dennis to go with Dawn as a thank-you for changing his life. As the humans left, Natalie encouraged Steve to bring his ideas to the real world, convincing him to return to Earth. Since then, Steve has helped develop the video game Block City Battle Buddies and holds singing performances at Game Over World with Garrett. In addition, when he returned to his old house to reclaim his past belongings, he met the current homeowner Alex.
Growing up, Steve claimed to have felt very restricted by those around him. He was denied his dream of entering the mines until he became an adult, and his creativity was stifled by people. As a result, he felt little grief about being trapped in the Overworld, and in fact seemed thrilled to be on his own.[1] However, he felt little resentment towards the people of the world, hoping to inspire them like his adventures did to him. As a result, he eventually relented and decided to return, helping create a hit video game along the way.
Steve and Garrett possess an immediate bond, doing a handshake upon meeting and making a deal. Over the course of the film, they embark on many adventures together, such as flying together with elytra and working together in a fighting ring. Steve is also shown calling Garret "Gar-Gar" as a nickname. Although they are shown to get along, Steve is also more wise and knowledgeable than his friend, not afraid to make fun of his fumbles. Upon preparing to leave, Garrett expressed great sadness, and specifically referred to Steve as his brother, showing a deep bond between the two. When Steve decides to return to Chuglass with the misfits at the end of the film, he commonly spends time with Garrett and performs a song with him at Game Over World.
Somehow, Steve managed to become "dungeon buddies" with Chungus, and knew him well enough to refer to him on a first name basis. Since escaping from the Nether, Steve appears to recognize how dangerous he is and dreads encountering him in combat. Chungus however does not appear to hold any ill will towards him, reminiscing fondly about his chicken jingle and referring to him as an old buddy. When told to "end [Steve's] life" he shows hesitancy, but doesn't fight the order and proceeds to try killing him, albeit semi-casually.
As soon as the two come into contact, Steve and Malgosha possess a contentious relationship. Shocked by his roundness, Malgosha's first reaction to seeing Steve was confusion, quickly replaced by greed as she learns of him possessing the Orb of Dominance. As Steve ends up getting captured by her forces, he quickly proves quite antithetical to her beliefs, having apparently befriended fellow prisoners who willingly posed for him to sculpt. After killing them, Malgosha attempts to barter with Steve, tricking him into thinking she has Dennis captured if not killed so he can try and claim the Earth cube for him.
In spite of Steve agreeing to her offer, he immediately quells any chance of actually helping her, at most hiding certain details from the misfits as he meets them. As the piglins arrive to rendezvous with Steve, the deal is effectively off, the meeting turning into a full-scale invasion. By the time the conflict ends, Steve contemplates showing mercy for Malgosha as she slowly suffocates to death, only to be met with repeated attempts to stab him with a knife. The last time Steve sees Malgosha, he knows not to trust or even humor her, as her mind fades from zombification.
STEVE - The Overworld's most trusted (human) steward and a bona fide wizard of the cube. Luckily, the four misfits have got this new friend and his best friend, a wolf named Dennis, in their corner.
Hey, I am Steve! Welcome to THE OVERWORLD. Malgosha's piglins are trying to take over. Her plan totally sucks, we need to stop it! Natalie and Dawn are deep in the wilderness. They need your help haulin' battle supplies. My boy Henry is down in the mines. He needs help collecting resources. Garrett's defending the village walls. He needs help crushing those piglin brutes! Upgrade your gear at my Secret Stash. Yeah, elite loot aaaall the way. And pick up swag at the Diamond Bootique! In the words of me: Save the village... Save the world!
My name is Steve. And as a child, I yearned for the mines. But it didn't really work out. So, I did a terrible thing...I grew up. Yep, that's me. Same shirt, same pants. The only thing missing, was my soul.
You ever wonder what happens when you mix hot lava and chicken? I did, and you're about to find out.
This is a crafting table. Here's how it works. You place these elements in different patterns, and kaboom! You got yourself a sweet blade!
Kid, anything you can dream about here, you can make. Zero limits. You know what I'm talking about.
First we mine, then we craft. Let's Minecraft!
There was no joy, or creativity at all. Just a mindless lust for gold.

In an early version of the film, the role of Steve was given to a character called "Wiki".[4] This was presumably a reference to the Minecraft Wiki or Wikipedia. In another version of the film, Steve's role was given to a piglin who betrays Malgosha.[4] Remnants of this idea can be seen in the final film, where Steve was at some point "dungeon buddies" with Chungus.
