The Great Darkening was an invasion attempted by Malgosha after blocking the sun of the Overworld using the Orb of Dominance in a beacon frame.

Background

[edit | edit source]

After fulfilling a lifelong wish of exploring a mine, Steve discovered the Earth Cube hidden inside the cavern walls, inadvertently becoming the first human known to enter the Overworld. From there he would spend decades exploring and forming allegiances, until he came across a third dimension, the Nether. By coincidence, he immediately came into contact with Malgosha, who had long desired to discover the secrets of the Orb to acquire gold.

In an attempt to prevent the invasion, Steve gave the Orb to Dennis and instructed him to return it to Earth. However, this gave way to four misfits discovering the Overworld themselves, with one of them accidentally destroying the Earth Crystal. After meeting up with Steve, all five heroes ventured to the woodland mansion to replace the crystal, however they were ambushed by Malgosha and a small group of seekers. In the process, she claimed the Orb, and Garrett was believed to have died in a noble sacrifice.

Preparations

[edit | edit source]

With the Orb now in the palm of her hands, Malgosha possessed virtually limitless power. Returning to the obsidian gateway, she gave it to Travis who placed it inside of a larger container at the top of the portal. A bright purple beam from the container shot up into the sky, forming dark clouds that blocked out the sun. Immediately, the dimension's balance was shattered, as zombies and skeletons emerged from the shadows ahead of schedule, and Nether wart spread throughout. While this was going on, the four heroes regrouped at the Mushroom Safe House, Steve and Henry taking time to recover from their loss.

As tensions rose, the four returned to Midport Village and began concocting a plan. Using all that he had learned on the journey, Henry proposed that they construct an army of iron golems, and requested to use the Boots of Swiftness. Steve ventured to a mine to acquire diamonds, and Natalie crafted herself a diamond sword. Dawn used a series of explosives, powered by redstone, on a group of skeletons. She then used their bones to tame several wolves.

Now readier than ever, the four ventured to the site of the portal. While Malgosha ordered her army to steal all the gold from the villages, Henry and Natalie placed carved pumpkins on iron structures, creating several iron golems. Henry then placed the Boots of Swiftness instead of a carved pumpkin on one, creating the Super Iron Golem. The army marched towards the advancing piglins, but then they stopped and stood idly, not seeing the piglins as a threat. Malgosha commented from the sidelines, informing the army that iron golems don't attack unless provoked. However, Travis then shot an arrow at the Super Iron Golem's face, drawing the attention of the entire iron golem army. Malgosha expressed her disappointment towards Travis, but the Super Iron Golem swung at him, knocking him far away. The battle then formally began.

The battle

[edit | edit source]

The iron golems charged towards the piglins, knocking them away with their arms. Meanwhile, Henry and Natalie fought off more piglins while heading towards the gateway. Malgosha noticed this, and ordered the New Hog to stop them. The New Hog knocked away several iron golems before chasing after Henry and Natalie. The Super Iron Golem landed in front of it, blocking its way. Meanwhile, Steve snuck up on Malgosha, equipped with a full set of diamond armor and a diamond sword. Using some blocks, he jumped high up into the air, but missed Malgosha and landed face flat on the ground in front of her. Taking advantage of this, Malgosha struck Steve with her staff, breaking his chestplate. Steve quickly recovered and started throwing eggs at Malgosha. Two of the six thrown eggs hatched chicks, which latched onto Malgosha's face.

As Henry and Natalie neared the gateway, the New Hog finally used its arm cannon to blast the Super Iron Golem away, stunning it. While it chased after Natalie again, Henry used his potato launcher to shoot an ender pearl up to the top of the portal. Just as it was about to strike Natalie, it was distracted by Dawn, who walked onto the battlefield with Dennis. It laughed, but Dennis howled, leading a large pack of tamed wolves towards the New Hog. They overwhelmed the New Hog, giving Henry time to build up towards the container holding the Orb. However, it regained control and fired a shot at the top of the portal, destroying a portion of it and knocking Henry off. While Henry fell and the rest of the gang watched in horror, the Hog shot towards Henry once more. In the nick of time, Garrett triumphantly revealed himself, saving Henry from the second shot and his fall using a ghast.

Garrett and Henry embraced while the others celebrated for a short while, and Garrett revealed that he used Steve's "water bucket trick" to survive the explosion on the bridge near the Woodland Mansion. He then told Henry to use a spear to jab the ghast's tentacles. This caused it to shoot fireballs at the portal, destroying it and releasing the Orb in the process. The dark cloud dissipated, and the piglins began zombifying. The New Hog picked up the Orb and laughed again, before being launched into the air by the Super Iron Golem. The Super Iron Golem flew up with its Boots of Swiftness and slammed down on the top of the New Hog's head, sending it to the ground and killing it. Natalie caught the Orb dropped from above, while Garrett and Henry landed the ghast on the ground.

Steve continued fighting Malgosha, and quickly overpowered her as she was zombifying. Steve held her at swordpoint, telling her that her plan failed. Malgosha said that "to build is to suffer", and Steve agreed, saying that to create is harder than to destroy. Steve was about to leave, but Malgosha convinced him to come back. She tried to stab Steve with a knife, but Steve simply slapped it away. She tried to do it again, and failed once more. Steve didn't turn back, but then Malgosha said Steve's signature "sneak attack!", and threw one last knife onto the ground. Then, she finally zombified, leaving the two piglins next to her to look at each other in confusion.

Aftermath

[edit | edit source]

With the beacon destroyed, the battle was ultimately won by the five heroes. The Overworld almost appeared as if the battle had never happened, with the piglins leaving little impact on the realm as they were left to die. The heroes would use the reclaimed Orb to return to the Earth portal, saying goodbye to the Overworld. Upon returning home, they pulled from their experiences to better their own lives, Natalie opening up a dojo and Garrett basing a video game off the conflict. Dawn's work with the wolf pack led to her adopting Dennis, who became a popular attraction at Dawn's zoo.

Trivia

[edit | edit source]
  • The situation in the film is an adaptation of a plotline featured in Minecraft Legends, wherein the Orb of Dominance was used to create the Night Beacon, with a similar effect on the Overworld. In the context of the game, this is an inciting incident that causes creatures such as zombies and creepers to fight against the piglins, but in the film the problem is resolved by the heroes and iron golems alone.
    • The events of the Great Darkening also bear a noticeable resemblance to what’s depicted in A Minecraft Movie Live Event, with piglins invading Midport Village and its surroundings. However, the event is set entirely during broad daylight, with the piglins having multiple Nether portals and Garrett actively working with his friends to stop them, making the continuity with the film unclear.
