A skeleton is an undead creature made of humanoid bones.

Unlike other mobs adapted to the film, skeletons bear some noticeable differences from their original design. They closely resemble a regular skeleton, however with more angular, cubic bones, most notably the square head and rib cage. Where the original model had no visible fingers or feet, the redesign has them in both more square and realistic forms respectively. Their head is a near perfect cube, with only very slight curves on the jawbone and beveled edges. As well, the face is noticeably more aggressive if not cocky, designed to look like they have eyebrows. They are approximately 1.945 meters tall.

Skeletons are shown to be monstrous creatures, though unlike zombies quite intelligent, as they wield bows, most of which are enchanted with flames. In extreme circumstances, they can work together with spiders, becoming spider jockeys.

As with other undead, they combust when exposed to sunlight. Unlike zombies, they lack any apparent physical strength, and in fact can be slain very easily, several dying from a crash into a small flame. It is shown that when they die by sunlight or falling, they are reduced to a single femur bone, but explosions simply separate their bones.

After Steve entered the Overworld, he soon experienced his first night, when skeletons probably tormented him, but his first real bad night was in his third house, when many would bang on his door. When the sun reduced them to bones, Steve used one of them to tame Dennis.

Following the appearance of four heroes from Earth, several skeletons would try to hunt them down on their first night. One of them, Garrett Garrison, would try digging into the ground while being barraged with attacks from skeletons. Later, they would stalk Garret as he arrives outside, though not find him.

A skeleton would shoot the Earth Crystal to pieces, then detonate a creeper that would destroy part of Henry's Shelter, allowing zombies to enter.

The sunlight destroyed them in the morning, and they are seen again when Dawn whacks one with her shovel on the second night.

During the Great Darkening, skeletons would emerge from the woods and Dawn would explode a pack with TNT to tame wolves for the battle. Then others would burn once the humans win.

• The fact that explosions leave behind the skulls could reference the fact that charged creepers cause skeletons to drop skeleton skulls when killed in their explosions in Minecraft.
