Growth speed

[edit source]
Latest comment: 5 November 20183 comments3 people in discussion

How fast do bamboo shoots grow? I have an idea for an automatic farm, but to make it as effective as possible, the growth speed would be really useful, especially if it has different growth speeds at different heights. R3DSkyCChamp (talk) 17:20, 24 October 2018 (UTC)

Seems like roughly 1 Block /min. to me. Or Faster. Yilante 10 /29 /18. 3:57 a.m. 108.215.209.201 10:57, 29 October 2018 (UTC)

Even if this section means infinitely, (thereby excluding things like sheep shearing dispensers which need occasional reloading), what about coal from wither skeleton grinders or sticks from witch grinders? Cultist O (talk) 20:19, 8 November 2018 (UTC)

At which light level does bamboo better grows?

[edit source]
Latest comment: 18 June 20194 comments4 people in discussion

Hi there.

I've been tryin' to snatch from the water some bamboo while fishing in jungles since the grown up spots of are not yet available until Village & Pillage patch. So from that way I'm attempting to farm some bamboo. I have an underground orchard; just beneath a pool with crystal floor and inside the pool another orchard isle-like. So that underground orchard where I often plant some mushrooms, so it's dark down there, but also there is enough space to plant some bamboo as I guess that there could be a nice place for planting it.

Resembling real life bamboo, I did read that is better to grow with not too much light nor too much shade. I don't know how much light level should have Minecraft bamboo's growing but I suppose that a fairly level could be 7-8, without affecting the nearby mushrooms, perhaps. In the Nether, it needs light level 10 to grow Excellence 04:47, 5 May 2019 (UTC)

Yes, just confirming that it won't Grow at normal Nether (lack of?) lighting. Though it does not Detach (and I don't know if it does at what level - if - so). Yilante 5 /15 /19 1:46 p.m. 76.209.248.192 20:47, 15 May 2019 (UTC)
For Java edition, the top will not grow further if at light level 9 or less. --76.206.199.164 03:37, 18 June 2019 (UTC)

Breaking time table is incorrect

[edit source]
Latest comment: 6 October 20191 comment1 person in discussion

The table listing breaking times in Bamboo#Obtaining seems to be mostly incorrect. I can confirm that swords break bamboo blocks and saplings instantly (and take 2 durability damage), but each tier of axe has a different breaking time, and breaking with any other tool or an empty hand takes less than the listed 3 seconds. In addition, no tools (except swords) speed up the breaking of a sapling. –Sonicwave talk 01:10, 6 October 2019 (UTC)

Bamboo growing at night

[edit source]
Latest comment: 28 January 20222 comments2 people in discussion

Re: Comment from Amatulic on revert of explanation that bamboo can grow at night. Addressing the comment "Sky light level is not "bright" at night." While counter intuitive, this is not true. Per the description of sky light in in Light: " Sky light is not reduced at night; rather, the spawning of mobs is determined by internal light values." You can also see this in the F3 Debug screen. Bamboo's night growth behavior can be verified experimentally by:

  • creating a flat creative world
  • turning off doDaylightCycle
  • setting the time to midnight
  • planting a large field of bamboo
  • covering half of it with with slabs ~10 blocks above

You'll see that the bamboo with open view of the sky continues to grow while the bamboo sufficiently covered by the slabs to reduce it's sky light level below 9 does not grow.

I found this surprising so I dug into the source code and confirmed that bamboo was only checking sky and block light for growth.

I see now. You stated it in the article as a general observation, not as something Java-specific. Because Bedrock Edition has the larger installed base, most readers would be Bedrock players, and I can tell you that bamboo does not grow at night in Bedrock Edition, period.
To be certain, I just tested it using the steps you outlined above. Bamboo grew in the day, but not under the center of the slab platform, and they did not grow at all at night. Bone meal at night did make the bamboo grow by one stage under the slabs, each time bone meal was applied, but they still did not grow on their own.
Feel free to add it back, but note that the behavior is specific to Java Edition. Amatulic (talk) 23:44, 28 January 2022 (UTC)

How to know when bamboo stops growing?

[edit source]
Latest comment: 22 July 20231 comment1 person in discussion

Is there some way to know when a bamboo has stopped growing?
(like a texture change, like how wheat turns yellow)
(alternatively, is there some texture-pack or something that can be used to show this?)
Thanks!

More info about how a bamboo is determined positioning (as we may notice when manually farming them)

--FeedbackBot 17:37, 18 June 2025 (UTC)
That information would be more suited for a farming tutorial page and not here. BDJP (t|c) 22:37, 5 October 2025 (UTC)

Renders of the Other Bamboo Textures

[edit source]

I noticed that in the game, bamboo has four different textures, but after searching through the Wiki, I was only able to find a render of the first one. I rendered the remaining three and would like to upload them, but they don't seem to have official names in the game. The only one that has a render is called Leafless Bamboo JE1 BE2.png. Each of the four has its own JSON model, but the files are just named bamboo1, bamboo2, bamboo3, and bamboo4, which obviously isn't a very helpful naming scheme. How should these be named? Txt_3190 T C 15:42, 21 August 2025 (UTC)

My advice is to merge all four into one gif. πŸ‘ Image

What about the Asset History? Hmm, idk if bamboo will have it. I don't think it's a good idea to merge all four into one gif.Txt_3190 T C 10:28, 6 November 2025 (UTC)
Yeah you are right. Honestly, the best way is to have Bamboo1 and Bamboo to share the same name and then have Bamboo2 JE1 BE2, Bamboo3 JE1 BE2 and so forth. πŸ‘ Image
Ayaan 15:09, 6 November 2025 (UTC)
Ahem, I just realised JE and BE are actually different, and I'm not sure if 'bamboo1', 'bamboo2', etc are the best filenames. Anyway I've started writing bamboo's asset history in my Sandbox, is this OK? Txt_3190 T C 13:42, 8 November 2025 (UTC)
