I hope I'm using this talk page right, I'm not used to mediawiki. Anyways, are we sure that the max characters on a page is 256? I've tested in 1.16.4 and I don't remember the exact numbers, but if you fill the book up with i's, you can get a lot more than just 256. Amagicmuffin (talk) 20:59, 24 January 2021 (UTC)
Formatting Codes do not work on the Book and Quill for either Bedrock Edition or Java Edition
[edit source]Latest comment: 4 January2 comments2 people in discussion
For Bedrock Edition, you are capable of pasting the § symbol into the book, but it has no affect on the way the text is displayed. When exiting the editor for the page, the formatting codes disappear as they should, but the text format is not changed. For Java Edition, you cannot paste anything into the book, so the use of formatting codes in the Book and Quill or any other entity that displays editable text is a non-starter.--BeauwithaBang (talk) 04:04, 29 January 2022 (UTC)
- Tested this today and it works in BE.
- However I doubt the "deprecated content" notice is necessary as the linked bug is marked by Mojang as "works as intended". LowerDecks (talk) 19:21, 4 January 2026 (UTC)
When exactly was the limit raised to 14 lines
[edit source]
it was never changed
Should we add a Trivia addition about a book's "average" wordcount?
[edit source]
This might only be useful for me, but I was thinking about going into the game and writing out Lorem Ipsum in a book, just to get a feel for how much actual "writing" you tend to be able to fit in one book. Should I go for it and add the info as a Trivia note, or would that be removed? 76.105.253.121 19:55, 15 September 2024 (UTC)
- It might not, actually. I think it would be a nice addition. -~- Nerdyguy2000 Talk Edits 19:57, 15 September 2024 (UTC)
- Done! I would love if someone more skilled with technology wanted to test this with a handful of public domain books and short stories, like The Lottery, The Raven, The Tell-Tale Heart, The Yellow Wallpaper, etc. Stories with action and dialogue will likely take up more space and might have a lower average wordcount per page. There's got to be an easier way than painstakingly copying it in line by line. ;-; 76.105.253.121 21:36, 15 September 2024 (UTC)
- I don't know about that. I think that it's fine as is. -~- Nerdyguy2000 Talk Edits 21:49, 15 September 2024 (UTC)
- Well, it looks like someone reverted it. They felt that the information is already essentially conveyed since the character limits are included. I think it's a shame, and disagree, but I'm not a Wiki regular. I figure they know best. 76.105.253.121 07:24, 16 September 2024 (UTC)
- (I can't deny that my disappointment with the decision is significantly based on having spent several hours getting this information and having really wanted it to be helpful to someone else.) 76.105.253.121 07:26, 16 September 2024 (UTC)
- Well, I assume your figure is calculated from Bedrock edition,[moreinfo 1] so not specifying you're Bedrock only is misleading + you're missing out Java information. Also the information would be better included by taking that existing 1023 / 256 figure and dividing it by six to put on the page after where it currently lists the character sizes something like "Using an average of 5 characters per word, a book may contain roughly 170 words per page (Java) or 42 words per page (Bedrock)".
↑ Your figure was 41.2 words per page so using the standard 5char=1word, + 1char for spaces, your figure is 250 chars per page. The page states that one page can have up to 1023 characters (Java) / 256 (Bedrock) so you must be on Bedrock.

- Then would a Java only calculation be better? See here, there's a mathematical observation that is only applicable to Java Edition. -~- Nerdyguy2000 Talk Edits 13:53, 16 September 2024 (UTC)
- To be clear, I was on Java. I definitely should have specified that! Anyways, Anachronist has explained their reasoning, and I'm not a regular here, so the last thing I want is an argument. Some fun facts are only fun for me, clearly. :) 76.105.253.121 21:44, 16 September 2024 (UTC)
- I have removed the trivia entry recently added about this. This is all original research, and the calculations for how many words could fit are covered already well enough in the article body text. This isn't useful to know, and many players are kids who would have no clue what "Lorem Ipsum" is. It's non-interesting to such readers, and therefore fails the first criterion of MCW:TRIVIA. ~Anachronist (talk) 18:38, 16 September 2024 (UTC)
I have doubts about the width of the GUI for Book and Quill
[edit source]
我注意到文本里写了书与笔每行的宽度为122像素,每页最多1023个字符,但是我的测试结果与此不符。我希望知道是如何得出这两个数字的。
I noticed in the text that the width of each line of the Book and Quill is 122 pixels, with a maximum of 1023 characters per page, but my test results do not match this. I would like to know how these two numbers were derived.

Does the § still work in book and quills?
[edit source]Latest comment: 17 May1 comment1 person in discussion
I play bedrock and i wanna use the § cause itll add to how i want the book to be written but it doesnt seem to work, everytime i close and reopen the book it deletes the § and the letter put in front of it. Which is annoying.
i also noticed that you cannot do page breaks anymore as trying to space out your writing cause causes the book and quill to pretend you never even pressed the enter key. It is quite annoying ~2026-MeadowPigTuff13226 (talk) 17:51, 17 May 2026 (UTC)
