Use on Anvil

[edit source]
Latest comment: 9 January 20132 comments2 people in discussion

Is there a template for the Anvil GUI? If so, we should use that. --Kahless61 23:14, 7 December 2012 (UTC)

Unfortunately, there is not, I was involved in a discussion that pretty much said it useless, but I think that was before the enchanted book was added. I don't know really, with more and more items being added for specific use on an anvil, it may be a potential feature of the wiki, but I can't see into the future :) #trigger_hurt(I|T|C) Check out my project! 14:42, 9 January 2013 (UTC)

Used Up

[edit source]
Latest comment: 7 December 20121 comment1 person in discussion

As far as I can tell, the only way to get an enchantment from a book onto a tool is to combine them on an anvil, which uses up the book in the process. Am I missing something? Otherwise, the enchanted book is really only used to avoid getting an undesirable enchantment (e.g. Bane of Arthropods) on a valuable tool (e.g. Diamond Sword). Books are cheaper than diamonds. --Kahless61 23:14, 7 December 2012 (UTC)

v1.4.6 vs v1.5

[edit source]
Latest comment: 10 December 20123 comments2 people in discussion

This page currently states "An Enchanted Book is an upcoming item for 1.4.6" but isn't the next official version going to be 1.5? These aren't bug fixes which would make it 1.4.6 these are new objects / features in the game which would make it 1.5 -+-Buzzaro 20:57, 10 December 2012 (UTC) (added later)

No, they stated that they will be making a 1.4.6 which will be released prior to 1.5 in order to get Fireworks in before new years. They've already released one snapshot of it (12w49a), and it includes these Enchanted Books, as well as Fireworks. --Kahless61 00:04, 8 December 2012 (UTC)
I knew about the snapshot, that's what brought me here to ask the question; I thought 1.4.# "The Pretty Scary Update" was finished and were moving on to 1.5 next, that's where I was confused. They were useing the standard major.minor.revision scheme so 1.5 would be the next logical update given the things added. But this is their game, they can number it any way they wish. -+- Buzzaro 20:57, 10 December 2012 (UTC)

Stacking Effects

[edit source]
Latest comment: 21 December 20123 comments3 people in discussion

You can use an enchanted book on an item that is already enchanted. I have only tested this on a piece of armor: Protection I + Book w/ Protection I = Protection II.

Is this what enchanted books were intended for?

This also means in theory you could achieve the highend enchantments by stacking them, thus removing the need for many, many bookshelves 90.209.167.145 13:05, 8 December 2012 (UTC)

I haven't downloaded and tried out the snapshots but I was wondering if is possible to stack different enchantments (e.g. combine an unbreaking III book with a sword, then combine a looting III book with the unbreaking III sword.) --76.168.136.118 11:19, 19 December 2012 (UTC)

Yes. This yeilds an Unbreaking III Looting III sword. Tested and confirmed. You can stack any number of different effects on any item, so far. --Kahless61 20:06, 21 December 2012 (UTC)

Combining them need to repay all the enchantments strenght.

Confusing typo

[edit source]
Latest comment: 15 December 20121 comment1 person in discussion

In the table listing the effects, it says "Unbreaking usually take effect with armor." I have no idea what this could mean. I believe that unbreaking doesn't do anything on armor, but I don't know. Pokechu22 19:23, 15 December 2012 (UTC)

Hacked books

[edit source]
Latest comment: 16 December 20121 comment1 person in discussion

If you hack the book's enchantment to higher level(e.g. Protection VI) it will still cost more, but the enchantment will stay at maximum level(e.g. Protection V). Tested with level 32767, I don't know if extreme levels matter.178.252.127.251 09:32, 16 December 2012 (UTC)

Just confirming... Silk touch swords don'tget cobwebs?

[edit source]
Latest comment: 22 December 20125 comments3 people in discussion

Someone just changed the page to that effect, I wanted confirmation. --Mental Mouse 21:03, 19 December 2012 (UTC)

In 1.4.6 official release, silktouch-ed swords are also able to obtain cobwebs.--AMotohiko 12:12, 20 December 2012 (UTC)
Thanks! I see it's already been changed back. --Mental Mouse 19:30, 21 December 2012 (UTC)
I've tested this further. Silk touch on sword and shears were the only tools able to get cobwebs. Picks, Shovels, Axes, and Hoes, enchanted with both silk touch and efficiency V were about as effective as using your fists, with the same results (broken cobweb, no yield, and 5 minutes of my life wasted ;-) ) --Kahless61 19:49, 21 December 2012 (UTC)
Unfortunately, as a recent editor noted, you can't put Silk Touch on a sword in survival anymore. --Mental Mouse 23:49, 22 December 2012 (UTC)

Hydrophilic I

Latest comment: 26 May 20133 comments2 people in discussion

I have just obtained an enchanted book, with the name Hydrophilic I (in translation)... Why isn't this mentioned in this wiki? Apparently, it can be found in chests in dungeons, in the 1.4.6 version for PC...

Data Values

[edit source]
Latest comment: 8 October 20163 comments3 people in discussion

If I wanted to give myself an enchanted book with a specific enchantment, how would I do that? It seems that it doesn't just use the data value. For example, I'd expect "/give Kahless61 403 1 33" to give me a silk touch enchanted book, but instead I get an Enchanted Book with no enchantment. --Kahless61 19:17, 6 January 2013 (UTC)

The enchantment is stored as an NBT tag, rather than data value. Try using the /enchant command while holding a blank enchanted book. -- Orthotope 00:51, 9 January 2013 (UTC)

One may use the "/give @p enchanted_book 1 0 {StoredEnchantments:[id:-ID-,lvl:-LEVEL-}]}" to obtain books with specific enchantments with these id's 1-Fire Protection, 2-Feather Falling, 3-Blast Protection, 4-Projectile Protection, 5-Respiration, 6-Aqua Affinity, 7-Thorns, 8-Depth Strider, 9-Frost Walker, 16-Sharpness, 17-Smite, 18-Bane of Arthropods, 19-Knockback, 20-Fire Aspect, 21-Looting, 32-Efficiency, 33-Silk Touch, 34-Unbreaking, 35-Fortune. Bug is not a bug

[edit source]
Latest comment: 5 May 20132 comments2 people in discussion

Just me, but I don't see this at all:

"One notable bug is that when a player logs out of an SMP server with an Enchanted Book in their inventory, the book loses its enchantment name and becomes a useless "Enchanted Book" on re-entering the server."

Candidate for removal?

90.220.166.68 21:12, 12 January 2013 (UTC)

I think that it should be removed because that was a bug with bukkit, not vanilla minecraft. Pblolpb 14:41, 5 May 2013 (UTC)

Enchanting Books with an anvil?

[edit source]
Latest comment: 31 January 20154 comments4 people in discussion

Hello, just a very quick question: is it possible to enchant a book using the anvil, i.e. placing a plain book in the first slot and a sacrificial enchanted item in the second one? Thanks. Aelyth 12:21, 15 January 2013 (UTC)

No, you can't. hotdogPi-t--c--Try my quiz! Do not click! 20:45, 26 May 2013 (UTC)

The article says you can enhance an enchanted book by putting another enchanted book in the sacrifice slot. Is it possible to do this by sacrificing a different enchanted item (Like a golden pickaxe with Efficiency IV, Unbreaking I, and SIlk Touch)?75.165.49.48 16:33, 31 January 2015 (UTC)

Similarly, no. I’m Nick the Red37, f.k.a. Naista2002 16:58, 31 January 2015 (UTC)

Wrong info : Looting III on an Axe

[edit source]

I tried on a 1.4.7 SMP server, looting III books wouldn't work on a diamond axe. I'm not so good with this stuff, so I rather let someone else edit the article !

Clarification could be useful about being able to stack enchanted books, only in creative =

[edit source]
Latest comment: 25 January 20131 comment1 person in discussion

I think the sentence "Furthermore, enchanted books themselves can be combined" should include the mention of Creative mode. There's a warning in bold below it. But it would be so much clearer if the sentence read "Furthermore, in Creative, enchanted books...". Then both bold lines can go. Though the second one could go below the paragraph before. It's a shame you cannot stack books in survival mode, magic is magic after all. 82.73.150.7 08:06, 25 January 2013 (UTC)

Cheaper renaming

[edit source]
Latest comment: 27 May 20132 comments2 people in discussion

Renaming my really good diamond boots (trying to get prior repair cost down) costs 34 levels. With a Protection 1 book, it only costs 18. That's another good use of the enchanted book. (Yes, your numbers will be different.) hotdogPi-t--c--Try my quiz! Do not click! 20:45, 26 May 2013 (UTC)

Low probability and Easy do not equal?

[edit source]
Latest comment: 1 September 20142 comments2 people in discussion

These two lines seem to contradict? "Books are less "enchantable" than other materials, which reduces the probability of receiving some high-level enchantments. They are one of the easiest ways to get high level enchantments." Low probability and Easy do not equal? –Preceding unsigned comment was added by 74.138.194.89 (talk) at 19:10, 1 September 2014 (UTC). Please sign your posts with ~~~~

Books, while they cannot easily receive high level enchantments, two lower level enchantments can be combined in an anvil to get a high level enchantment for a low cost. You also know what you are putting on your valuable tools, rather than getting a random toss. --KnightMiner (t|c) 21:41, 1 September 2014 (UTC)

Custom Enchanted Books?

Of course there is.

For Sharpness X specifically, the command would be /give ? enchanted_book ? 0 {StoredEnchantments:[{minecraft:sharpness, 10}]}.
Also, please sign your comments with four tildes, not three. — Agent Nick the Red37 (talk · contribs) f.k.a. Naista2002 15:12, 14 February 2015 (UTC)
Dosen't work for me, as it says it couldn't find the name/value seperator for 10.
And when I figure out the problem, I'll do Sharpness 1000/M. 98.159.29.164 23:49, 11 November 2015 (UTC)

So the page only has the axe icon in that section, confirmation or repair required.

This table lists what things an enchanted book can do, that an enchantment table can't. – Sealbudsman talk/contr 11:16, 12 September 2016 (UTC)

history of Silktouch book's exceptional usefulness

[edit source]
Latest comment: 27 July 20194 comments2 people in discussion

I just found out about how silk touch functions even on a book (on the condition the block can normally be harvested by hand, such as breaking a grass block to get dirt) and was wondering how long it's been a thing... but no one ever included an entry for this in the History section of the page. When was this added and why didn't I know about it? This would've saved me a lot of trouble when trying to get my first piece of grass block on a few occasions.--Macks2008 (talk) 20:45, 26 July 2019 (UTC)

I guess that could explain why it's not documented in the history yet (because it's somewhat new). Guess I could always play around with different versions to see when it changed, right? Or at least, someone could; I've found playing past 1.13 to be somewhat painful due to my unique control setup (long story; probably long enough to constitute a blog post sometime, but I can't be bothered right now).--Macks2008 (talk) 15:56, 27 July 2019 (UTC)

In Java Edition, there are 35 unique enchantments, in Bedrock Edition, there are 34, some have 1 level (like mending, aqua affinity, flame), Some have 2 (frost walker, knockback, punch, fire aspect), some have 3 (unbreaking, fortune, lootin,g quick charge, sweeping edge‌[Java Edition only]), 1 has 4 (piercing), some have 5 (sharpness, power, efficiency) Humiebeetalk contribs 19:35, 18 August 2021 (UTC)

I don't think so, actually. Lunge enchantment is not a treasure one and can be obtained without enchanted books. Also, books enchanted specifically with Lunge don't generate anywhere. So Lunge is just another basic enchantment that doesn't need to be mentioned on this page, similarly to e.g. Protection. Melwin22 (talk) 10:06, 22 December 2025 (UTC)
