I found a leash in a dungeon while playing around with snapshot 13w16b in creative mode. it was in the seed '-4310341312778663078' at the coordinates x:-124 y:64 z:464 I hope this can be of use. 98.221.132.67 20:14, 25 April 2013 (UTC)

The page mentions that name tags need to be renamed first to make them work. But what if I want to name a mob "Name Tag"? Will it work nonetheless? --☺ Sven ? ! 15:26, 27 April 2013 (UTC)
I agree with both of you. How the nether does this work? 24.101.252.196 02:14, 15 February 2015 (UTC)Bananaguy 555
I am not sure since what version chests appear in nether fortresses - I found them in snapshot 13w25c. These chests contain the same items the dungeon chests contain. I found 3 name tags in the chests there.

Anyone found out whether naming a hostile mob affects whether they despawn when you switch to peaceful mode? It seems logical that you'd still end up removing a hostile, but that would be an annoying way to lose a good rename, by wasting it on a mob that you later despawn by switching difficulties.--184.21.69.62 04:00, 2 July 2013 (UTC)
I was able to successfully name an adult villager in 1.6.2 SMP vanilla. I simply renamed the name tag on an anvil, which cost 5 experience levels, and then right-clicked the adult. Bam. Name over his head. --Digitalgadget 02:07, 24 July 2013 (UTC)
I was able to name one too, you need to rapidly click on them with the name tag and exiting the menu that pops up for it to eventually happen SN202 21:36, 24 July 2013 (UTC)
Does somebody know if named hostile mobs wich are in a non loaded chunck despawn if you change dificulty to peacefull. For example if I have an named Zombie Pigman in the Nether and change game difficulty to peacefull in the Overworld does he despawn? (Asumming I only enter the Nether with a higer difficulty setting) 217.253.31.178 12:53, 9 September 2013 (UTC)
In trivia it says both that adult villagers can and can´t be renamed, it doesent make any sense. –Preceding unsigned comment was added by 90.230.254.173 (talk) at 01:06, 12 January 2014 (UTC). Please sign your posts with ~~~~
i am doing some research can you tell me how to name a mob in the xbox 360 platform? –Preceding unsigned comment was added by 64.33.228.60 (talk) at 17:26, 5 June 2014 (UTC). Please sign your posts with ~~~~
I was able to name an adult villager in SMP by myself by simply spamming right click and open inventory key a few times with the nametag in my hand. Probably due to the latency, i was still in the inventory when right clicking to put the tag on. I've attempted it in SSP but to no avail, i'm sure something could be worked out for it though. –Preceding unsigned comment was added by Masterman467 (talk • contribs) at 15:14, 2 September 2014 (UTC). If you don't use an anvil to rename a name tag, would you name the mob "name tag"? I can't test this because I play pocket edition.75.165.49.48 16:46, 17 January 2015 (UTC)
It's worth noting how name tags will prevent mobs from despawning. 184.2.209.78
Verification that a name cannot be removed without the use of commands?
Mentioned in the behaviour section, and it is false. PEOJI (talk) 20:41, 30 January 2025 (UTC)

"A named villager keeps its name when transformed into a zombie villager. Once transformed, the zombie villager can despawn naturally unless it was transformed by a named zombie." in the usage category is not true? on java atleast.
