New trivia

[edit source]
Latest comment: 26 April 20204 comments4 people in discussion

Would it be ok if I added a new trivia . It would be that squid can survive in a single block of water. –Preceding unsigned comment was added by 96.236.223.233 (talk) at 14:58, 30 May 2015 (UTC). Please sign your posts with ~~~~

This is a wiki, so generally be bold in editing. Although I think that your trivia is too obvious. And, also, please sign your comments in the future. — 👁 Image

What does "useful" mean in the context of using a squid in a minecart? I don't understand what that comment adds to anything--I find it confusing to picture exactly what happens when you try to get a squid into a minecart. Does it work? Why would it matter whether there's water or not? This could use some clarification. ChapnCrunch (talk) 20:56, 22 July 2015 (UTC)

Milking squids was possible because they borrowed cow behaviouur, so this should probably be added to the trivia section.104.34.226.124 22:58, 26 April 2020 (UTC)

Squid Spawn Radius

[edit source]
Latest comment: 16 February 20191 comment1 person in discussion

I've gotten confirmation from gnembon that squid spawn/despawn by the same basic rules as most hostile mobs - not within 24 blocks of the player, despawn over time if outside of 32 blocks and despawn instantly if more than 128 blocks away. I'd change the info box on spawning to include this info, but it seems the page is in a protected mode at present because of vandalism issues. 1.18 Squid Spawn Changes

[edit source]
Latest comment: 21 March 20224 comments3 people in discussion

Squid used to require 2 blocks of water in order to be able to spawn however as of 1.18 they now require 3 blocks Source: https://youtu.be/nyiWUpFRrjo – Unsigned comment added by KrakinEggs (talkcontribs) at 20:29, 16 March 2022 (UTC). Sign comments with ~~~~

Note that in Bedrock Edition 1.18, squid and glow squid can spawn in water 1 block deep. I'm not able to test Java. — Auldrick (talk · contribs) 21:22, 16 March 2022 (UTC)

Upon some testing using a custom superflat world it seems this water is still not required to be stationary. This testing was done in a deep ocean biome. Squid also are still unaffected by flowing water. This was tested using one source block of water flowing into two air spaces. More testing would be required to see if 3 flowing blocks of water would allow spawning. This was tested in Java 1.18.2. I have added this to the page however I am unfamiliar with the proper formatting so I apologize if I got it wrong. If anyone knows how to make sure it is correct then feel free to adjust it. I was trying to make a squid farm and found this information very hard to come across for some reason, possibly because it is so recent. Regardless I hope this helps others :).KrackinEggs (talk) 05:52, 21 March 2022 (UTC)

That YT video you referenced above is not an authoritative source, and its conclusions may be faulty. In general, player experiments can disprove facts but it's risky to try to prove something experimentally. Furthermore the video was using Java Edition, but you used it to update Bedrock Edition history on Squid. You cannot assume that the same rules apply to both editions, even in a new release.
Only statements from Mojang, including the contents of changelogs, in-game patch notes, and facts given on verified developer-owned accounts (Twitter, Reddit, etc.) can be considered authoritative. Please familiarize yourself with the Help:Official sources page. — Auldrick (talk · contribs) 08:16, 21 March 2022 (UTC)

Java Squid Spawning Correction

[edit source]
Latest comment: 28 December 20253 comments2 people in discussion

The code for squid spawning I don't think has changed since cave & cliff. Attached is 1.21.8 code: 👁 Image

In particular, we can also clarify some of the things brought up by this topic regarding 3-high water:

  • The block itself must have water fluid tag (water source itself, flowing water, or waterlogged blocks), but typical collision checks apply, for example:
    • Waterlogged blocks with no collisions are fine.
    • Waterlogged blocks with collisions are fine if they don't intersect the squid (e.g. bottom/sideway trapdoors aren't fine, but top trapdoors are).
  • The block above must be water (source or flowing).
  • The block below must have water fluid tag (like the block itself, but can be things like waterlogged stairs, leaves, etc. because there's no collision check).
  • The y level is the first 13 levels below sea level, inclusive.
    • By default, the sea level is 63, so they spawn between y 50 to 63, inclusive.
    • Care must be taken when testing in superflat since the sea level will be fixed to -63, so we can get them to spawn there.
    • Likewise, maps with custom sea levels can have different y ranges where they spawn.
My point is that the y level is based on sea level, not fixed to 50 to 63.
  • There is no light level restrictions.
They can spawn in a dark room, in open/roofed area with/without skylight, next to portals with some block light, etc.

WaterGenie3 (talk) 04:02, 9 September 2025 (UTC)

Note the collision check applies in general and does not relate specifically to the spawning block or the one below, they could be any waterlogged blocks provided the squid does not collide with them. For example, the block can be water with a waterlogged fence below and it will still fail because the squid will collide with the fence, as opposed to other waterlogged blocks. Does the baby squids can swim? I saw them with no animation. IronSculkJungle7643 (talk) 17:03, 22 May 2026 (UTC)
