Would it be ok if I added a new trivia . It would be that squid can survive in a single block of water. –Preceding unsigned comment was added by 96.236.223.233 (talk) at 14:58, 30 May 2015 (UTC). Please sign your posts with ~~~~
What does "useful" mean in the context of using a squid in a minecart? I don't understand what that comment adds to anything--I find it confusing to picture exactly what happens when you try to get a squid into a minecart. Does it work? Why would it matter whether there's water or not? This could use some clarification. ChapnCrunch (talk) 20:56, 22 July 2015 (UTC)
Milking squids was possible because they borrowed cow behaviouur, so this should probably be added to the trivia section.104.34.226.124 22:58, 26 April 2020 (UTC)
I've gotten confirmation from gnembon that squid spawn/despawn by the same basic rules as most hostile mobs - not within 24 blocks of the player, despawn over time if outside of 32 blocks and despawn instantly if more than 128 blocks away. I'd change the info box on spawning to include this info, but it seems the page is in a protected mode at present because of vandalism issues. Squid used to require 2 blocks of water in order to be able to spawn however as of 1.18 they now require 3 blocks Source: https://youtu.be/nyiWUpFRrjo – Unsigned comment added by KrakinEggs (talk • contribs) at 20:29, 16 March 2022 (UTC). Sign comments with ~~~~
Upon some testing using a custom superflat world it seems this water is still not required to be stationary. This testing was done in a deep ocean biome. Squid also are still unaffected by flowing water. This was tested using one source block of water flowing into two air spaces. More testing would be required to see if 3 flowing blocks of water would allow spawning. This was tested in Java 1.18.2. I have added this to the page however I am unfamiliar with the proper formatting so I apologize if I got it wrong. If anyone knows how to make sure it is correct then feel free to adjust it. I was trying to make a squid farm and found this information very hard to come across for some reason, possibly because it is so recent. Regardless I hope this helps others :).KrackinEggs (talk) 05:52, 21 March 2022 (UTC)
The code for squid spawning I don't think has changed since cave & cliff. Attached is 1.21.8 code:

In particular, we can also clarify some of the things brought up by this topic regarding 3-high water:

Does the baby squids can swim? I saw them with no animation. IronSculkJungle7643 (talk) 17:03, 22 May 2026 (UTC)
