Nintendon't Work

[edit source]
Latest comment: 5 August 20112 comments2 people in discussion

This template gives me trouble when I use Opera, a browser. Instead of just using the one little icon for the image, it shows the entire sheet of icons! Anyone know how to fix this? --Ikalpo 17:13, 12 June 2011 (UTC)

It works for me in Opera 11.11 and 11.50 on Windows 7. I'm guessing based on the section header that you're using the version of Opera Mini included on the Nintendo Wii? Unfortunately, I don't have a Wii at the moment and so can't test it there. ダイノガイ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 21:30, 5 August 2011 (UTC)

I mean the images. The actual bluey cracked portal and bluey transparent glass cube. Shouldn't they be on this template? I mean, gear and crying obsidian are there. (but the old cobble, lava, and mossy cobble aren't there...but that's probably because their updated versions aren't that drastically different) --HexZyle 21:33, 27 October 2011 (UTC)

End Portal Correct Rotation

Ok, so I made some schematics for the end portal creation here: End Portal, (as an imation of the Nether Portal schematics) but it wont work unless the sprites on the sides of the portals are rotated so that the eye has a horizontal line (the rotation of the frame blocks affect if the portal will actually work or not) tl;dr, it would be helpful if we had another two sprites that are just these two: 👁 BlockSprite end-portal-frame-top.png: Sprite image for end-portal-frame-top in Minecraft

384 is the default sprite for names without numbers, it is referenced in Module:BlockSprite. Really does not need a name, as no one should be displaying it.
36 and 96 are empty sprites. It is simply no one has bothered fill them. Feel free to use those spaces.
302-304, 327-328, 350-352, 371-373, and 375-376 are leftover sprites from old versions of terrain.png. The lava and water one stored the animation for said blocks on runtime, and the rest never had a use. Again, feel free to use those spaces.
254 is the tripwire texture, though since we have a "render" of how it displays in game, I would say that space is free to use as well.
As for 530, 538, 539, 547, and 551, those seem like renders either of non-blocks, or renders that would never get used (such as the Minecraft 2.0 talking block at 547). I would simply delete those.
On a related note, we should not have 543 ({{blockSprite|543}}) since its a useless spaceholder similar to the water and lava I mentioned eariler. 505 ({{blockSprite|505}}), 506 ({{blockSprite|506}}), or 529 ({{blockSprite|529}}) are all entities, so they are on the wrong sprite sheet. Lastly, 528 ({{blockSprite|528}}) is never going to be used, as we do not reference Minecraft 2.0 features in any other articles, and no sprites are used on Minecraft 2.0. KnightMiner t/c 03:25, 23 May 2015 (UTC)
I've removed the sprites I mentioned as unneeded, and now I have the question: do we really need the unused feature sprites? Namely, colored wooden planks, the chair, and crying obsidian? None of them are applicable outside of the unused/mentioned features article. KnightMiner t/c 01:42, 25 May 2015 (UTC)
Remove them, they are useless. –LauraFi - talk 01:55, 25 May 2015 (UTC)
I agree, let's toss em. Also, the cake item, and the hopper item. Actually.. Is it possible to get a list of where each sprite is used? Like a DPL that was aware of the parameters of the template, or something..? Lastly, can we put some obvious 'empty' marker where the blanks are, so you know, people know where they can insert new sprites? – Sealbudsman (Aaron) 👁 Image
t/c 11:16, 25 May 2015 (UTC)
Yeah, I agree with tossing those too, as we have a better render for both of those. As for the empty marker, since the air texture now has a slight border, people can assume that any empty space is available, but otherwise it is not too hard to search for a number in the module to see if it has a name (and if no name, you can assume unused).
For the list, using DPL would be complicated, I am not really sure if it would work. Otherwise an idea would be modifying the sprite template to allow adding categories to specific sprite numbers for deprecation. KnightMiner t/c 15:15, 25 May 2015 (UTC)
Yeah, let's modify the sprite template. DPL just came to mind, specific implementation isn't important. Also.. cog 71 ({{blockSprite|71}}), underside of cake 181 ({{blockSprite|181}}), underside of cactus 104 ({{blockSprite|104}}), side of bed 222-225 ({{blockSprite|222}}{{blockSprite|223}}{{blockSprite|224}}{{blockSprite|225}}), top of brewing stand 229 ({{blockSprite|229}}), innards of cauldron 203,204,228 ({{blockSprite|203}}{{blockSprite|204}}{{blockSprite|228}}), full-side of anvil 320 ({{blockSprite|320}}), preview flower 469 ({{blockSprite|469}}), seems no one would use those? Anyway adding categories via sprite template would tell us the answer to that. – Sealbudsman (Aaron) 👁 Image
t/c 16:20, 25 May 2015 (UTC)
Rather than deprecating individual sprites, would it make sense to have Module:Sprite automatically add a category based on which sprite is being used? For example, Category:BlockSprite-2, Category:ItemSprite-137, etc.. Each category could be inspected to see if and where a given sprite is used. If we do this, someone should have a bot create them all as hidden categories first. — Orthotopetalk 17:08, 25 May 2015 (UTC)
I had not though of that as a solution. It could work, though it would certainly flood pages with categories, especially from sprites used from certain navboxes. Since categories are added simply by adding text, it should not decrease efficiency too much per sprite, but it might cause a small dip in efficiency in pages that use a lot of sprites, especially since every sprite call would add a category. It would definitely need to be set as optional though, so pages using certain sheet, like {{comment}}, would not be marked.
The only real downside from that as opposed to the solution I came up with that I can think of is you cannot have a certain name value as deprecated, as it marks by number IDs instead. KnightMiner t/c 17:49, 25 May 2015 (UTC)
At the risk of being too trigger-happy: more I propose we at least look at, once we get a Category system going that can review these things: 45-degree single-block bed 20 ({{blockSprite|20}}), 45-degree cake 44 ({{blockSprite|44}}), side-grass layer 55 ({{blockSprite|55}}), multi tulips 93 ({{blockSprite|93}}), brewing stand top 230 ({{blockSprite|230}}), redstone torches 65,66 vs 148,172 ({{blockSprite|65}}{{blockSprite|66}}{{blockSprite|148}}{{blockSprite|172}}), torches 69 vs 121 ({{blockSprite|69}}{{blockSprite|121}}), levers 70 vs 145 ({{blockSprite|70}}{{blockSprite|145}}).
There are also the "old texture" sprites: dark shrub 56 ({{blockSprite|56}}), ruby ore 187 ({{blockSprite|187}}), full-block original chests 162-168 ({{blockSprite|162}}{{blockSprite|163}}{{blockSprite|164}}{{blockSprite|165}}{{blockSprite|166}}{{blockSprite|167}}{{blockSprite|168}}), purple placeholder texture 186 ({{blockSprite|186}}), air portals 188, 189 ({{blockSprite|188}}{{blockSprite|189}}), "block 36" 210 ({{blockSprite|210}}), old beacon 240 ({{blockSprite|240}}), original bricks 309 ({{blockSprite|309}}), infinite water and lava 443,444 ({{blockSprite|443}}{{blockSprite|444}}), original grass 496 ({{blockSprite|496}}), original cobble 520 ({{blockSprite|520}}), indev cobble 544 ({{blockSprite|544}}), original planks 521 ({{blockSprite|521}}), original gravel 545 ({{blockSprite|545}}), original dispenser 522 ({{blockSprite|522}}), original iron block 546 ({{blockSprite|546}}). I know we're at least using original bricks and original grass in {{Computer versions}}, and dark shrub in grass#History, but I figure as a group they deserve a little consideration. – Sealbudsman (Aaron) 👁 Image

Sprite rotation

[edit source]
Latest comment: 21 February 20173 comments2 people in discussion

Hello, is it possible to add the four 90° rotations for each colored glazed terracotta block? It would be easier to make patterns on the wiki (see Talk:Glazed Terracotta#Terracotta designs?). Or perhaps add a rotation option to the template so it would work for any block? — Thomas645 (talk) 09:54, 12 February 2017 (UTC)

It can be achieved using CSS. For example, {{BlockSprite|Red Glazed Terracotta}} produces 👁 BlockSprite red-glazed-terracotta.png: Sprite image for red-glazed-terracotta in Minecraft
, but {{BlockSprite|Red Glazed Terracotta|css=transform:rotate(90deg)}} produces 👁 BlockSprite red-glazed-terracotta.png: Sprite image for red-glazed-terracotta in Minecraft
. However, if patterns are to be shown, this may need to be implemented for {{BlockGrid}}. Majr, can you edit the module? The Blobs👁 Image

I've added an option in {{BlockSprite}} so you can have rotations for every block, using CSS as you suggested. It may not be the best Lua code though, as I'm no expert. Anyway, thank you for your answer. — Thomas645 (talk) 14:57, 21 February 2017 (UTC)

Upside-Down Stairs

Latest comment: 26 February 20173 comments3 people in discussion

This might already be possible, but can someone please make a different sprite for upside-down and right-side-up stairs, or at least a way to differentiate them? It would help out a lot for things like the Structure Blueprints project, especially the End City blueprints.

Gregatron6000 (talk) 09:29, 26 February 2017 (UTC)

It can be achieved by setting {{{css}}} to transform:rotate(180deg). Thomas645 implemented this feature for {{BlockGrid}}. However, I am not sure how to use it; you will need to check the module's edit history. The Blobs👁 Image
15:33, 26 February 2017 (UTC)
Just append -rot<degrees> to the end of a sprite name. Note that the texture will look a bit weird from some rotations though, as the texture has an orientation (which is part of the reason I am hesitant to add a flip feature rather than just adding stairs facing the other way). If it turns out to be wanted it should be easy enough to add flipping in the X and Y directions though. KnightMiner t/c 21:57, 26 February 2017 (UTC)

Because it is not being used anywhere. Sprites are added here because they are needed rather than for the sake of having them. The ones in InvSprite are used on the Minecraft 2.0 page to show its crafting recipes. KnightMiner t/c 15:09, 15 May 2018 (UTC)
I intend to use them on the version nav template to represent the three versions of 2.0. - MinecraftPhotos4U (talk) 15:11, 15 May 2018 (UTC)
If they are needed, add the icon (though just the ones you use), but right now the icon is the redstone bug which I think is much better as tinted glass looks way too similar to the non 2.0 feature of stained glass. KnightMiner t/c 15:28, 15 May 2018 (UTC)

Block Scale (for schematics)

[edit source]
Latest comment: 12 April 20194 comments2 people in discussion

Because Magmablock is now useful beyond just killing mobs (or yourself), It would be nice to have an option in the template to change the scale for all blocksprites to a schematic scale (scaling up by two). I would try to do it, but I'm not the most familiar with the lua scripting used to create the blocksprites and don't want to ruin it. For example;

{{BlockSprite|magma-block-texture-update|schematic="1"}}

might generate: {{Sprite |pos=551 |align=text-top |image=BlockCSS.png |scale=2 |size=16 |sheetsize=384 }} instead of 👁 BlockSprite magma-block.png: Sprite image for magma-block in Minecraft

Similarly, specifying "0" for the "Schematic" Parameter, or just leaving it out would generate the small version.

DarthKeidran (talk) 11:48, 9 April 2019 (UTC)

You can already change the scale using the scale parameter on blocksprite, which is much more clear (and smaller to type) then an arbitrary schematic parameter: 👁 BlockSprite magma-block.png: Sprite image for magma-block in Minecraft
. Its especially easy to do in block grids as you only have to specific scale once:

Sheet compression

[edit source]
Latest comment: 12 June 20212 comments2 people in discussion

Hi. The block sprite sheet (and all others on the wiki) appears to have been have been highly compressed. All the textures in all sheets are now very blurry and can be compared to a compressed JPEG file. Attempting to upload a more cleaner version of the file just results in more compression, I'm pretty sure. Also, EVEN THE OLDER VERSIONS OF THE SPRITE SHEETS HAVE BEEN COMPRESSED. This could have been caused by the domain migration somehow, since I don't recall it being like this before. Ever. I think all other files have been compressed, but its most major on the sprite sheets, mainly this one. -Ultsppi (talk) 01:24, 23 March 2021 (UTC)

I also noticed it on the Template page. They only show up dirty in the icons on the list for template documents, but on other pages they show up fine. Here is an example of a particularly dirty Shulker Box. --Pneuma01 (talk) 10:39, 12 June 2021 (UTC)

Honeycomb in waxed copper sprite

[edit source]
Latest comment: 30 March1 comment1 person in discussion

In infested blocks sprit, like 👁 BlockSprite infested-cobblestone.png: Sprite image for infested-cobblestone in Minecraft
and 👁 BlockSprite infested-stone.png: Sprite image for infested-stone in Minecraft
, has a silverfish symbol in the middle to differentiate the sprint from the normal block, otherwise it would be exactly the same.

By the same logic, there should be something to differentiate copper blocks and waxed copper blocks. The honeycomb (👁 Image
) seems like the obvious choice.

We need to think about what Irai would put in the all-copper sprites. Ideally, there would be three options: for non-waxed, waxed, and really all. I thought the first would be the current version (👁 BlockSprite all-copper-blocks.png: Sprite image for all-copper-blocks in Minecraft
,👁 BlockSprite all-cut-copper-blocks.png: Sprite image for all-cut-copper-blocks in Minecraft
etc.), the waxed ones the current version with the hade, and all the current version with a honeycomb cut in half horizontally. Aloi4 (talk) 06:23, 30 March 2026 (UTC)

'string' isn't an alias for 'tripwire'

[edit source]
Latest comment: 26 April4 comments2 people in discussion

In this data, 'redstone-dust' and 'redstone-wire' are both used to refer to the placed form of redstone dust, which is useful when linking to it with BlockLink templates. However, the placed form of string (the item you use to craft bows) is only referred to as 'tripwire'. You can't use the word 'string' to refer to tripwire. I would like 'string' added as an alias for 'tripwire' both here and in the BlockLink template. I'd change it myself, but I don't have permission. Batbrain55 (talk) 07:01, 26 April 2026 (UTC)

You don't have to edit the template, nothing in the template's wikitext handles aliases. You can create File:BlockSprite string.png that redirects to File:BlockSprite tripwire.png. That's how aliases are done in these sprite templates. 👁 Image
QwertyLilley [talk] 07:29, 26 April 2026 (UTC)
