The City is the primary setting of Minecraft: The Outsider. The largest city in the Overworld, it stands as a monument to the evolution of humans, protecting its inhabitants from outside threats such as zombies that had once tormented them during the Before Times.

The City uses redstone in much of it's infrastructure. One house in the book is described to have toggleable lighting in addition to torches, and minecarts are used for transportation, which can be dangerous to pedestrians to the point where it is stated that the City is significantly more dangerous during the day.

Location

[edit | edit source]

Most of the exact geography of the City is unknown. According to one of the characters, the City contains most of the world's population, and all who live outside are part of the City's economic ecosystem. The terrain on the border of the city has been deforested and strip-mined by the Redstone Company. Further out, but still less than a day's walk away from the City, is a small civilization of zombies. By the end of the book, the deforested lands have been revitalized to the point of being indistinguishable from untouched nature.

The City has more than enough economic output to be self-sufficient; concerns about survival in the City are rare. Frequent use of redstone leads to things like minecart rail systems and small flying machines being commonplace in the City. The City has an educational system, with classes focusing around basic Minecraft skills like crafting and potions, but students are not allowed to apply any of these skills. The City celebrates City Week, a week-long celebration during which school is cancelled. Denizens of the City struggle with product awareness; at one point, a character mentions that their food was sold from a store, grown on a farm of unknown quality.

Quotes

[edit | edit source]

Brant didnโ€™t even have to try to be cool. His parents were the richest people in The City and ran the redstone contraption company Redstone Co. Even though it was called Redstone Co., it dealt with a lot more than redstone, and its contraptions and merchandise were basically what kept The City running these days. Redstone Co. got The City its coal, iron, wood, brewing items, bonemeal, lava source blocks for obsidian, and so much more. Brantโ€™s parents threw the best parties in The City, so naturally their son was popular.
