Change Language & Region settings on Mac

On your Mac, use Language & Region settings to set the language you want shown in macOS and apps, and select the formats used to show dates, times, numbers, and more.

To change these settings, choose Apple menu  > System Settings, click General 👁 Image
in the sidebar, then click Language & Region. (You may need to scroll down.)

Option

Description

Preferred Languages

Choose the language or languages you want shown in macOS and in apps (for example, in menus and notifications), and on websites (if available in a preferred language). See Change the system language.

If you add input sources, those languages are automatically added to the list.

Choose Apply to Login Window to have the login window use the primary language (from the list of preferred languages above). If your Mac has multiple users, everyone will see the login window in this language.

Note: If you don’t see the Settings pop-up menu 👁 Image

it means the login window is already set to use the primary language.

Region

Choose the geographic region whose formats are used for dates, times, numbers, and currencies.

When you choose a different region, the options and the preview shown change.

Calendar

Choose the type of calendar used to display dates and times.

Temperature

Select the preferred temperature format.

Measurement system

Select the preferred measurement system.

First day of week

Choose the first day of the week.

Date format

Choose the date format, such as day, then month, then year.

Number format

Choose the format for numbers, such as when a comma appears.

List sort order

Choose the sort order for names.

This option is available only for some primary languages.

Term of address

In supported languages, personalize how your Mac addresses you by choosing your preferred term of address (feminine, masculine, or neutral). Turn on “Share with all applications” so that all apps can personalize how they address you.

Live Text

Select text in images to copy or take action. See Use Live Text to interact with text in a photo.

Applications

Customize language settings for individual applications. See Choose the language you use for individual apps.

Translation Languages

Select languages to download to your computer so you can translate when offline. You can also process translations on your Mac, even when connected to the internet. See Translate text.
