A yarn ball[1] (also referred to as a ball of yarn[2]) is an object that can be created by rolling up an enemy or object using the Yarn Whip in Kirby's Epic Yarn and Kirby's Extra Epic Yarn. After obtaining a yarn ball, Kirby or Prince Fluff can then toss it in any given direction to attack other enemies or break blocks, including cloth blocks and enemies that cannot be affected directly by the Yarn Whip. They can also be placed down on the ground and picked up again later. Using yarn balls is the primary means of attacking bosses in the game.

In Kirby's Extra Epic Yarn, yarn balls can be created using the Knitting Needles Ravel Ability. When wrapping up an enemy on top of using this ability, extra large yarn balls are created which can pass through enemies when thrown.

Types of yarn balls[edit]

There are several different types of yarn balls, which are made from certain types of enemies. These are as follows (note that names are conjectural):

  • Regular: a standard circular yarn ball that can be tossed to defeat enemies, similar to a Star Bullet.
  • Arrow: a triangular projectile that passes through enemies it hits.
  • Homing: a winged yarn ball that chases after enemies it is thrown toward. Some of these can split into three projectiles when thrown.
  • Bomb: a yarn ball with a fuse that can be tossed forward in an arc. It does not explode on impact, instead exploding when its fuse burns through. This type can only be created by wrapping up Bomber.
  • Wheel: resembles a regular yarn ball until thrown, where it rolls across the ground until hitting its target. If thrown upward, it will travel forward in an arc then fall to the ground. This type can only be created by wrapping up Shelby.
  • Light: a yarn ball that dispels darkness around it. This type can only be created by wrapping up Stogue.
  • Giant: a yarn ball made by transforming an enemy into a yarn ball while also using the Knitting Needles ability, resulting in a larger projectile that can pass through enemies.

Yarn balls by enemy/object[edit]

When enemies and objects are wrapped up into a yarn ball, the resulting ball will retain the color(s) of the object or enemy in question, though this is purely cosmetic. The following enemies and objects turn into the following types of yarn balls when wrapped up (enemies not listed here cannot be turned into yarn balls or do not appear in places where the Yarn Whip can be used):

Knitting Needles on a lava bubble (white core) Giant A quirk of the lava bubbles in Lava Landing causes the normal roll up animation play in place of the Knitting Needles exclusive one. If the player walks away from the lava bubble as they are rolling it up, it's possible for the center color of the yarn ball to be white.
Lava bubble Regular This yarn ball is obtained via rolling up the lava bubbles during the rising lava section at the end of Lava Landing. The giant yarn ball has the same pattern and color as the Embird.
Meta Knight's Crescent Shot (large blue) Regular Each one of Meta Knight's projectiles has the same gray giant variant.
Meta Knight's Crescent Shot (large green) Regular Each one of Meta Knight's projectiles has the same gray giant variant.
Meta Knight's Crescent Shot (large red) Regular Each one of Meta Knight's projectiles has the same gray giant variant.
Meta Knight's Crescent Shot (small blue) Regular Each one of Meta Knight's projectiles has the same gray giant variant.

Orbitfly Regular (glitched) In Kirby's Epic Yarn, it is possible for two players to gain enough height at the Rocket section in Stellar Way to spawn the first wave of Orbitflies. Similarly, in Kirby's Extra Epic Yarn, it's possible for the player to glide over from an earlier section of the level with use of a Ravel Ability to spawn the first wave of Orbitflies. Both of these actions allow the players to interact with the Orbitflies. These enemies don't have a yarn ball dedicated to them, so the yarn ball that results from rolling them up is simply the model of the Orbitfly.
Sawgill Arrow All sources that result in an Arrow yarn ball have the same brown color as their giant variant.
Sea Jelly Regular
Shelby Wheel
Sneak Sack Regular
Spear Mariner, Sword Mariner Regular All Mariners have the same color as their giant variant.
Spear Mariner's spear, Sword Mariner's sword, Spear Soldier's spear, Sword Soldier's sword Arrow All sources that result in an Arrow yarn ball have the same brown color as their giant variant.
Spear Soldier, Sword Soldier Regular All Soldiers have the same color as their giant variant.
Stogue Light This yarn ball can also appear from behind various patches in Dark Manor
Sulkworm's projectiles Regular Interestingly enough, the giant variant of this yarn ball retains the jagged shape.
Swadclod Regular
UFO Homing (triple)
UFO (green) Regular (glitched) In an identical fashion to the Orbitfly, this yarn ball is obtained through the use of a trick that allows Kirby and Fluff to gain enough height to spawn this enemy in a section that is intended for the Rocket Metamortex.

Unlike the Orbitfly, in Kirby's Extra Epic Yarn, there isn't a known way that has been performed yet to spawn in this enemy and interact with it using the Knitting Needles Ravel Ability, so the style of this yarn ball is currently unknown.

Visually, this yarn ball resembles the triple homing yarn ball created via rolling up the standard UFO enemy, except slightly rotated clockwise, smaller, and using the green color palette of this variant. However, despite the appearance, this yarn ball behaves like a regular yarn ball.

Waddle Doo Regular
Whistle Mariner Regular All Mariners have the same color as their giant variant.
Whistle Soldier Regular All Soldiers have the same color as their giant variant.
Yarn Block Regular

Other items[edit]

Though not visually appearing as a traditional yarn ball, nor requiring the player to roll them up, there are a few other items that can be picked up and behave similarly to the different types of yarn balls:

Object Type Appearance Notes
Beach Ball (Furniture) Beach Ball In the stage Blub-Blub Ocean during the Dolphin Metamortex section, the player may come across an area with three beach balls and a net. As the Dolphin, the player may pick up the beach balls and toss them into the hoop with use from their Play ability. When thrown, the trajectory of the beach balls are similar to the Bomber yarn ball; thrown in an arc and affected by gravity. However, these beach balls are lighter and bouncier. When the beach ball with the chair design is thrown into the hoop, the player receives the Aquarium Furniture piece.
Beach Ball (Star) Beach Ball Identical to the furniture beach ball with one exception. When this beach ball with the star design on it is thrown into the net, the player is rewarded with a Star Bead.
Button Bombs Bomb Exclusive to Kirby's Extra Epic Yarn, behaving identically to the Bomber yarn ball, this bomb can be produced from the Button Ravel Ability as often as the player chooses.
Carrie Carrie In the Sub-Game Carrie's Transport, the player can pick up and throw Carrie around the stage. When thrown, Carrie has the same trajectory as the Bomber's yarn ball; thrown in an arc and affected by gravity. Carrie cannot be used to destroy any objects or defeat any enemies.
Kirby Player When Kirby is picked up by Prince Fluff, he takes on the Baseball transformation[needs verification]. When thrown, Kirby's trajectory is similar to the Bomber yarn ball; thrown in an arc and affected by gravity. However, Kirby is thrown with much more force and travels further. After being thrown, Kirby will destroy or damage any blocks he comes into contact with at the same power as a regular yarn ball until he lands.
Missile Missile These explosive items appear in many stages throughout Kirby's Epic Yarn. They can appear carried by Bronto Burts, crafted and thrown by Waddle Dees, shot at the player by the Blast Mariner as well as the Cannon Mariners and Soldiers, and can be found falling from the sky in Boom Boatyard. When picked up, the player may throw them in a straight line, causing an explosion on impact which destroys objects and defeats enemies.

Although these missiles are normally picked up by the player, when the player picks up a missile the first frame a Waddle Dee starts forming it, the player will be able to do the roll up animation instead. This does not affect the functionality of the missile.

Prince Fluff Player Prince Fluff will take on an identical transformation as Kirby will when picked up with all the same behaviors.
Squashini's card Regular During the boss fight against Squashini, one of the boss attacks involves throwing cards at the player. These cards may be picked up and thrown back at Squashini. Despite their appearance, these cards behave the same exact way as regular yarn balls do, including rolling on sloped surfaces when dropped (i.e. the edges of Squashini's hat) and being able to be pushed (via Squashini's 3-card attack).
Squashini's bomb Missile During the boss fight against Squashini, one of the boss attacks involves bombs being rained upon the player. These bombs may be picked up and thrown back at Squashini. Despite their similarity in appearance to Bomber's yarn ball, the fuse on these bombs never goes down. Their functionality is otherwise identical to the missile.
