In order to move massive volumes of data into and out of the cloud without relying on networks, Amazon has created the Snow Family of physical devices. This enables you to utilize your data with the vast array of Amazon analytics, file system, and archive services. Large-scale data transit and local storage are both well suited to it. For use cases like sophisticated machine learning and full motion video analysis in disconnected settings, Snowball Edge Compute Optimized devices offer 52 vCPUs, 42 terabytes of useable block or object storage, and an optional GPU. A tractor-trailer is used to transport an AWS Snowmobile shipping container. These services can help with initiatives including data migration, disaster recovery, shutting down data centers, and remote data collecting.

AWS Snow Family is a collection of physical devices that help organizations transfer large amounts of data into and out of the AWS(Amazon Web Services) cloud. It is designed for environments where traditional network connectivity is insufficient or unavailable. AWS Snow Family are often used for large-scale data migrations edge processing or in remote locations where network bandwidth is limited or unreliable. AWS Snow Family devices are rugged portable and secure designed to handle challenging conditions while ensuring safe and efficient data transfer.
The AWS Snow Family is ideal for large-scale data transfers and edge computing in various scenarios. These devices are designed to address specific challenges especially in environments where reliable network connectivity is limited or non-existent. Below are some unique and relevant use cases for the AWS Snow Family
AWS Snow Family offers flexible, cost-effective pricing based on the type of device used and the specific needs of your data transfer and computing tasks. The pricing structure is designed to ensure that customers only pay for the services they use making it an efficient solution for various data migration and edge computing needs.
The smallest device in the Amazon Snow Family of edge computing and data transport equipment is the AWS Snowcone. Snowcone is versatile, reliable, and safe. Snowcone may be used to gather, process, and transport data online via Amazon DataSync or offline by sending the device. Snowcone is a compact, reliable solution for edge computing and data storage. Snowcone may be used to gather, process, and send data online using Amazon DataSync or offline via sending the device to AWS. Because these sites frequently lack the capacity, power, and cooling required for data center IT equipment, running applications in sterile (non-data center) edge settings, where there is a lack of reliable network access, or when bandwidth is limited, can be difficult.
AWS Snowcone is a small, portable device designed to transfer data between on-premises locations and the AWS cloud, making it ideal for use in areas with limited or no internet connectivity. Refer to the diagram below for a visual explanation of how AWS Snowcone operates, showing its data transfer and edge computing capabilities
Edge Computing: AWS Snowcone allows you to run lightweight applications and process data locally at the edge, especially in remote or mobile environments where cloud connectivity is limited.
Data Migration: Snowcone is ideal for securely transferring data from locations with low bandwidth or no internet connectivity and enabling seamless migration to AWS cloud services.
Disaster Recovery: In case of disasters Snowcone helps collect and transfer data from affected areas to the cloud ensuring that data remains safe and accessible.
Military and Field Operations: Snowcone can be used in military operations or field research to gather data in remote areas, process it on-site, and transfer it to AWS when connectivity is restored.
Media Production: For film or video production teams working in remote locations, Snowcone enables capturing and securely transferring large media files to AWS cloud storage for editing and distribution.
Large amounts of data are sent to Amazon Web Services using AWS Snowmobile, an exabyte-scale data transfer service. Up to 100PB of data may be sent with each Snowmobile. It is a semi-trailer truck pulling a 45-foot-long ruggedized shipping container.Faster-than-internet data transfers between Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) and your on-site data storage location are possible with the AWS Snowball service using physical storage devices. Physically robust devices called Snowball are secured by the AWS Key Management Service (AWS KMS). Your data is secured and safeguarded while in transit. Snowballs are shipped from Amazon S3 to your on-site data storage facility through local shipping companies. See AWS Snowball in the AWS for a list of AWS Regions where the Snowball device is accessible. Using AWS Snowball will help you save both time and money. You can utilize Snowball's robust interfaces to create jobs, track data, and monitor the progress of your jobs all the way to completion.
AWS Snowball offers two device types, as detailed in the table below.
Snowball Edge Storage Optimized devices | Snowball Edge Compute Optimized devices |
|---|---|
Ideal for large-scale data migrations | Handel workloads needing significant compute power |
Provides 80 TB of HDD storage for object storage | Offers 42 TB of HDD storage for object storage, plus 7.68 TB of NVMe SSD for AWS EBS block volumes |
Includes 1 TB of SSD storage for block volumes | Equipped with 208 GiB of memory and 52 vCPUs for high-performance tasks |
You order the device load your data onto it and ship it back to AWS where they upload your data to the cloud. This process helps avoid slow internet transfers making it ideal for migrating large datasets or working in areas with limited internet access. Refer to the diagram below for a visual explanation of how AWS Snowcone operates, showing its data transfer and edge computing capabilities.
Use Cases of AWS Snowball:
AWS Snowball with the snowball device has the following features:-
AWS Snowmobile is a physical data transfer service designed for large-scale data migrations to the AWS cloud. It is essentially to secure 45-foot long shipping container that can transfer up to 100 petabytes of data in a single shipment. AWS Snowmobile is ideal for industries needing to move vast amounts of data such as media, entertainment or government sectors. It offers high-level security Including encryption GPS tracking and security personnel to ensure safe transport of your data to AWS data centers.
AWS Snowmobile works by physically transporting large amounts of data from your location to AWS data centers. Refer to the diagram below for a visual explanation On How does AWS Snowmobile Work.
