King Watinga[1] is a large, robotic Fly that serves as the boss of the Gnat Attack minigame.
In Mario Paint, King Watinga appears after every fly has been swatted. King Watinga is capable of flight, spawning Fly Children, and shooting out stinger missiles. After taking 10 swats, he starts turning red, and the color deepens after he takes 15 swats. After taking 20 swats, he convulses and explodes, completing the level.
In Super Mario Maker, King Watinga appears in the final level, where he appears at the start. He only spawns Fly Children and flies off-screen, returning when all the Fly Children have been swatted. When Watinga takes enough damage, he turns angry and red, and his theme is replaced by a sped-up version. Like in Mario Paint, he explodes after being defeated, completing the minigame.
Following the release of Version 1.20, King Watinga can also appear on the level editor screen if a Muncher is shaken after the flies have already spawned. Angering him by swatting him repeatedly will start a more challenging version of Gnat Attack. In this mode, two King Watingas appear. The first King Watinga becomes angry after he first flies back-on screen, which happens when two of the Fly Children have been swatted, instead of all of them. However, any remaining Fly Children after his death will have to be swatted to summon the second King Watinga. Defeating the second King Watinga complete the minigame.
King Watinga also appears in Fly Swatter, a minigame that is a remake of Gnat Attack appearing in WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Microgame$!.
King Watinga makes a small appearance in volume 5 of Super Mario-kun, in which he is brought out of the Mario Paint game by Lemmy. After colliding with Yoshi, King Watinga fuses with him to become Hae Yoshi. In the end, he is destroyed, and Mario is able to redraw Yoshi.
