Amazon's Graviton Has Evolved Into A Formidable CPU Contender: Graviton1 To Graviton4 Benchmarks
Hammering these AWS Graviton instances with a very wide range of real-world workloads was showing the impressive capabilities of Graviton4 compared to prior Graviton processors.
In total for this AWS Graviton performance comparison I ran 77 different benchmarks. You can see all of the benchmarks in full along with the associated performance-per-dollar and performance-per-core metrics via this open result page.
Lastly is a look at the geo mean for all the raw performance benchmark results for summing up the performance. Going from the Graviton3 to Graviton4 metal instance was 1.55x the performance overall, still greater than the 1.5x core difference and would be an even larger difference if isolating to only the fully multi-core benchmarks but a number of single-threaded tests were run for reference purposes. Going from the original Graviton1 a1.metal instance to Graviton4 metal was an incredible 10.4x! It's been very fascinating to see the rapid evolution of Graviton performance and with this generation being finally able to really compete with AMD EPYC and Intel Xeon current-generation processors in a range of workloads both in "metal" terms as well as vCPUs. Very healthy competition in the cloud CPU space and it will be interesting to see how Graviton4 compares to AmpereOne once available GA in the cloud as well as other increasing ARM cloud processor alternatives from other hyperscalers.
If you didn't see the other Graviton4 benchmarks, see the 64 vCPU instance comparison to AMD and Intel in AWS cloud and the Graviton4 metal comparison to Ampere Altra Max / AMD EPYC / Intel Xeon for more perspective in how Graviton4 has become a formidable competitor to the veteran CPU leaders.
