Linux 6.12 Through Linux 7.0 File-System Benchmarks For EXT4 + XFS
With the random read performance under FIO, both file-systems have gradually improved over these kernel releases since late 2024. A nice and steady upward trajectory in random read performance with the kernel progression.
For 4K random writes when not using direct writes, the performance has, unfortunately, dipped on the newer Linux kernel releases.
But with direct random writes, the newer Linux kernels have brought some nice improvements particularly for Linux 6.19+ with both EXT4 and XFS.
