Ubuntu 25.04 Beta Delivering Some Nice Performance Improvements Over Ubuntu 24.10

Out of 120+ benchmarks run on Ubuntu 24.10 vs. Ubuntu 25.04 beta, Ubuntu 25.04 beta was in first place 70% of the time on this AMD Ryzen 9 9900X3D + Radeon RX 7900 XTX desktop.

If taking the geometric mean for all those results in full, Ubuntu 25.04 beta was around 3% faster overall than Ubuntu 24.10 on this modern desktop.

Some of the most significant wins on Ubuntu 25.04 beta for this AMD Zen 5 desktop were observed with Python scripting thanks to the Python 3.13 upgrade, some cryptography operations, 7-Zip as packaged in the Ubuntu archive, some OpenJDK/Java workloads, and more.

One other observation on this Ubuntu 25.04 desktop with AMD Ryzen 9 9900X3D was seeing slightly lower CPU power consumption than with Ubuntu 24.10. This may come down to AMD P-State refinements and other kernel improvements from Linux 6.11 to Linux 6.14.

Ubuntu 25.04 beta is running well overall in the tests I've carried out so far this week. Stay tuned for more desktop / laptop / server testing of Ubuntu 25.04 Linux over the coming weeks on Phoronix.
