What is data roaming?

Data roaming is when you use your data (rather than WiFi) to access the internet outside the UK. Your phone connects to a different network, so you may incur extra charges. Turn data roaming on and off through your Vodafone account

Keeping costs down while travelling

Check your roaming bars

Turn off any active roaming bars in your My Vodafone account or app so that you can still use your data and other services while you're away.

Set a limit on how much you spend

Choose how much you can spend when using your device. You can even prevent receiving calls and texts, so you don't have any surprise charges.

Set up Spend Manager

If you're on Pay Monthly, you can set a spend limit for services not included in your monthly allowance, like picture messages or international calls.

Keep track of your bill

Keep tabs on your usage or credit. When abroad, it can take up to 72 hours for new charges to appear on your bill.

Frequently asked questions

Sometimes, your device can connect to another country's network. This is called inadvertent roaming and happens when you travel near an international border.

How can I prevent inadvertent or accidental roaming?

You should receive a message if your device connects to an international network. If you've had a message saying you're on a new network, and it's for a country you're not in, take these steps to stop unexpected roaming charges:

  • Review your Vodafone Spend Manager limit in My Vodafone app or by calling 191

  • Set up a Data Roaming bar in the My Vodafone app or by calling 191

  • Manually set your network to the country you're in. If you do this, you'll need to manually change your network again each time you visit a new destination

Inadvertent or accidental roaming between Northern Ireland and Republic of Ireland

We know that our customers in Northern Ireland can sometimes connect accidentally to our network in the Republic of Ireland, so we've made roaming in the Republic of Ireland available at no extra cost for all customers (subject to our fair use limit of 25GB).

If you exceed this fair use limit through inadvertent roaming and get charged as a result, speak to our customer services team by calling 191(+44 7836 191 191 if you're abroad).

Roaming is used for short trips and holidays abroad. Over a four-month period, if you're planning to spend more time abroad than at home, we may add extra charges to your plan. In our roaming destinations, you might be charged if:

  • You're roaming for more than 62 days

  • Your usage in our roaming destinations is more than your usage in the UK within four months

  • We'll send a text alert 14 days before charging you anything extra, so you have time to adjust your usage.

If you continue to roam, you might start to see charges, even in your inclusive roaming destinations.

These charges include:

  • £0.033a minute for calls

  • 1p per text

  • £3.83 per GB of data

If you exceed your UK data allowance when you're abroad, you will be charged as you would be in the UK. The charges will last until your next billing date or until you return to the UK, whichever comes first.

If your UK allowance is greater than 25GB, then a fair usage policy of 25GB applies i.e. once you have exceeded 25GB data use, then you will be charged £3.84 a GB used. The charges will last until your next billing date or until you return to the UK, whichever comes first.

You can turn off data roaming by going into settings on your mobile phone. This will vary depending on the model of your mobile phone.

Find specific step by step instructions with our device help guide

If you're having issues using your phone abroad, there are a few things you can try:

  1. Connect to a local network by restarting your device

  2. Try selecting a network manually

  3. Check roaming bars are turned off. If you're not sure how to do turn data roaming on and off, use our data roaming guide

  4. Check that Spend Manager is not set to £0 by logging into or registering for My Vodafone

  5. Check roaming bars are turned off

Are you a new Pay as you go customer?

You’ll need to activate your SIM by either topping up at least £5 or buy a Big Value Bundle, otherwise your SIM won’t work abroad. Once you’ve topped up, you can choose a roaming Extra or pay a daily charge.

All our pay monthly plans are subject to a 25GB roaming fair use policy. This means that if your UK allowance is greater than 25GB, you can use up to 25GB data a month while roaming.

If your UK data allowance is less than 25GB, you can use your UK data allowance when abroad, but if you exceed it you'll be charged as you would be in the UK.

Plans

Move to any of our Xtra Global Roam plans, to get the full 84 worldwide inclusive destinations.

We have 8-day roaming Extras available for our Europe destinations and Rest of the World destinations, and either 8-day or 15-day roaming Extras available for our Around the World destinations.

If you’re abroad, make sure you're connected to WiFi before you buy any Extras. They’ll activate from the moment you buy them. If you run out of data, minutes or texts, you can always purchase another Extra.

If you’ve bought a SIM in the UK with the intention of travelling abroad and roaming, you need to activate the SIM first by adding a Pay as you go Plus plan. Then, you’ll be able to add the roaming Extra you need.

European Roaming Passes allow you to use your monthly UK allowance of calls, texts and data in a Zone B destination.

A pass can be purchased at any time. It will remain on your account and will become active when you start roaming.

Your pass will last for either 8 or 15 days, depending on what pass you purchased.

You cannot purchase two passes at once so if your first pass runs out, you will have to purchase an additional pass.

You cannot roll over the Pass if you are roaming for less than 8 days.

  4. Select 'Turn off'
